The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I wonder if I could change the doors and make it look nicer?

I don't see any reason why you couldn't, as long as the framework of the cabinets is sound.

Oh yes! Definitely!

It's especially easy if you paint or stain the wood cabinets and door to match rather than the formica style covering that we have in my house. The cabinets are particle board and that is why we are fighting to have it all replaced. The leak has made all of the counters and shelving warped!

BTW....do you have an F whistle? I'm learning all this Lunasa stuff and I can't play along because my whistles are in the wrong keys (and I'm too lazy to redo the fingering.)

Very sound. Solid wood, not particle board.

The problem is, the doors are painted the same as the cabinets which is painted the same as the kitchen which is painted the same as the diningroom which is painted the same as the whole rest of the house. I don't know how I'd repaint the cabinets without repainting the entire house, because they are all connected! Literally connected to each other.

Certainly you can do new cabinet doors! Check out Home Depot... they won't be cheap, but new cabinet doors are a pretty pleasing project. The toughest part is that the new hinges will not line up with the old ones, so you will have to fill holes and re-finish the old cabinet backs, and installing the new hingest square so they stay closed is harder than it looks, we had a a carpenter put them in.

Yup. I hear ya sis! I love those Brat Pack films. The Breakfast Club is my favorite of them all though.

I plan on getting them all eventually, little by little. After TBC, I want Sixteen Candles, Some Kind of Wonderful and Weird Science. :)

Yes, I have an F whistle...got it from Elderly. A Gen. I really like it. Higher than a D but not so excrutiating as a G!

Blackhawk sent some C whistles to me to send to the troops and I kept them! LOL (I replaced them with some D's!) So now I have a C Feadog and a C Gen. I like them...I just really like that cylindrical bore.

Guess what the theme was at church yesterday? "Make a Joyful Noise"! And they gave out a bunch of plastic full size pennywhistles to all the kids! We were recruited to teach the two-year-olds and so I played my Feadog for them. Most of them stood just transfixed, listening to me...but one little boy that looked very much like a miniature Steve walked over to me and said "Stop doing that."

Steve nearly died laughing.

This other chaplain did an article in the last Desert Devil Dispatch I sent out

I read that article too. It was a goood one. I enjoyed it this morning. It was a reflection on the movie American Beauty, and how this Easter season is filled, unlike the characters in that movie, with good hope. "Christ has made it possible for us to be victorious in spite of our circumstances."

Ah...yes...I remember hearing that they play the low F a lot. Avanutria told me about that once.

But no mold could be seen, so that's good!

That is GREAT news, 2J! Plumbing problems are the worst!

That's right...that's the same chaplain. I wanted you to know without coming out and saying his name in the thread.

Probably wouldn't hurt anything, but I'd rather err on the side of caution, so to speak.

Not sure how I feel about it. I think kids still need to be kids.

Yeah, I know what you mean, but this kid sounds SELF-driven. It didn't sound like his parents were pushing him.

We're actually exploring the possibility of having our daughter take the GED as soon after she turns 16 as possible. That would preclude the need to jump through hoops to get a diploma for her, and she could live at home and start taking classes at the community college. She wouldn't have to rush, but could be earning college credits for the classes she would have done for Jr. and Sr. years in homeschool. It would be as though she were taking AP classes which many upper classmen do in most high schools now. She could do one yr. at the Community college, then transfer in to one of several 4 yr. colleges in the area.

Still mulling it over. She could do her first two years of college while living at home, then go off to college at the regular time, but not have to sit through the freshman courses; she could just go right into the classes for her major. She's considering Architecture right now.
