Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.
Speaking of hearing things... Who is whispering during Frodo's encounter with the Nazgul in Osgiliath? There were several voices whispering urgently but it wasn't the Ring Voice, and by extension not Sauron. Could the Valar have been shoring up Frodo's will?
Can't wait until the DVD comes out so we can see the subtitles. I kept expecting the Ring to call Faramir's name.
"Masterpiece" is not an adequate adjective to describe LotR. It fails to capture the breathtaking beauty of the cinematography--among other things. Whenever PJ pans the scenery, I want to lift from my seat and fly over the mountains and get a better look. I swear I can almost taste the fresh air. You are correct. New Zealand was the perfect choice.
I watched a special on the Two Towers last night that helped me realize just how difficult it was to film the movie. No wonder it was so expensive and took years to make.
I sure hope you are correct. For me, Faramir was the most troubling characterization. I always loved the contrast between Faramir and Boromir. Can you expand on why you think Faramir gets better each time? I have seen TTT twice now, and I am disappointed. Any insight would be appreciated. BTW, greetings! It's been a while. I have lurked occassionally; however, I haven't been good company, so I refrain from posting very much--don't want to be a drag.
49 1/2 HOURS TO GO!!!!!!!!!!!
Hang in there! You can do it!
The shop is very nice. You can only see half of it in these pictures. You can actually push the sliding door open and drive a car in it, if you want. The other side (that you can't see) is just as big, but is carpeted, has a bed and fridge, computer and a wardrobe. The window unit AC is on the other side too. The boys play in there a lot. Right now it's kind of messy because Steve is working on the treehouse in it.
I was up pretty late, huh?!

Just a thought. Some of the Ring dialogue in FOTR was in subtitles.
Hehehe....yeah....give it a few more viewings.
True enough. Good point.
Well, here is a compilation of reasons why....
My first reaction was that he was harsher than the book, but not extraordinarily so, and only because he doesn't get as much dialogue as in the book. If you read the chapters now and try to see it without knowing the end... Faramir is harsher than you think.
The actor plays it very subtly... yet he does give us glances and the moments of thought where we can interpret his thinking. I noticed them more on the second view than the first. PJ requires you to interpret and read these characters, and fill them out with what you already know, if you know them. Those fans that don't know better, won't care either. I am bringing the memory of what I know when I see his character. I want to like him, I want to respect him, and I do. ;~D
All of us who know the characters can give them whatever thoughts they must have had. The book forced us to use our imagination to see all these events. The movie gives us some of the pictures, but that doesn't mean you have to turn off your imagination and accept only what is on screen.
Use your imagination. Give your characters the thoughts and virtues and struggles you know they had to make your story work. In Faramir I see everything I need to see to make the story work for me. Much of it told to me well by Jackson, and the rest filled in by my own experience.
And check out this review from one of the TORN staffers, who talked to Phillipa Boyens, about why they made the changes they did. I can buy her explanation, live with it... we have not seen all of Faramir yet...
"Philippa "had some interesting things to say on the above -- basically saying that Faramir's character is completely static in the books, and thus wouldn't translate well filmically. She wanted to extend his character to give him more of a journey, and also seemed to imply that it would seem incongruous were Faramir immediately sea-green incorruptible; whereas all other Men in the film (even Aragorn) definitely have to wrestle with their conscience to a greater or lesser extent."
And I agree with her. If Faramir couldn't be given the dialogue it would take to explain his complex reason for letting Frodo go, then it would seem strange for him to not be tempted. The whole premise of the story is that it would corrupt anyone. So they tempted Faramir too, but unlike Boromir, he passed.
And I think it important to note that when he took Frodo, he was following law, not lust for the ring, and when he discovered the ring, he intended to take it for Gondor, he didn't just paw Frodo for it and want it for himself. At that time, he thought he was doing the right thing for Gondor... not a wrong thing.
I'm feeling lousy today. For the past two weeks, I've had somekind of bug that continues to torment me but I believe I've figured it out.
I think what happened is that I started with an allergy that became a sinus cold - I treated it with OTC meds and it backed off a bit - then I had a stomach bug right after Becky had one and I thought they were related, but my nausea continued. Then, I started coughing and sniffling and finally had the beginnings of a sore throat yesterday. This morning, I woke up and have practically no voice at all - and feel all stuffy and miserable. My conclusion is that I probably ended up with a sinus infection and since it was not treated with antibiotics, now I am paying in spades. :(
Anyway, I fixed up some pancakes and scrambled eggs, with bacon and sausage for the Hobbit Hole. I made plenty of coffee, but I'm sticking to orange juice this morning. ENJOY!
Glen called me here at work and suggested that I take half the day off and go relax. I asked where do I go to relax, dear? He said - how about the movie theatre? Heheheheee. You gotta love that man. No matter how lousy I feel, he says something to make me laugh. I haven't used my free pass yet, and I am starting to believe I will not get the chance to. *sigh*
