Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I only understand a few words in Spanish, but you picked one of the ones I know, since I like eating at Pollo Supremo, in Hialeah, once in awhile.
Ok, working my way up.

Okay, who can help with this one?
When I log into my identity on Windows XP I get a bunch of pop up window adds. Not quite like on the web, but the gray Windows format.
How do I get rid of them? I've got a permanent cable connection. Windows tells me if I close Windows Messenger I'll shut down Outlook Express as well.
To: Corin Stormhands
Windows tells me if I close Windows Messenger I'll shut down Outlook Express as well. Well that isn't true.... I uninstalled Windows Messenger... I would get rid of all instant messengers, but that is just me! ;~D What other popups? - You shouldn't be getting any kind of popups just opening Windows, unless it is still trying to install updates and setup stuff. I would imagine on a new machine there are updates and patches you need.

No these aren't updates. They're advertisements. Last one I read earlier tonite was "get rit of pop-up ads." It was a software thing.
I can just uninstall Windows Messenger? We have not reason for IMs anyway. I got rid of AOL IM, Yahoo IM and ICQ on the other computer. I hated them.
To: Corin Stormhands; Ramius
I don't see why you can't, I don't have it.... it may be trying to tie itself to your outlook, but you don't need it. I don't have it. That must be where the ads are coming from. All I can think of unless you have accidently installed Gator already! (have you?)
Try uninstalling it (don't blame me!).... with any luck you and I can have your machine completely unfunctional by morning!

Well, I just looked, and it looks like I do have Messenger, but it never turns on... hang on a minute.

No, I haven't installed Gator.
The only things I've installed that weren't already here are the Comcast software and RollerCoasterTycoon2 (which is really cool!)
To: Corin Stormhands
Go into MS Messenger Tools-Options and uncheck EVERYTHING... try that.

Hmmm....I just went to the icon on the bottom for Windows Messenger. This time it said "not signed in" and let me exit. But I don't have Outlook Express open.
To: HairOfTheDog
Is MS Messenger different than Windows Messenger?
I just went to Windows Messenger and cancelled the option to run at Startup.
To: HairOfTheDog
Why are you here answering my computer questions with 2 hours left to your birthday? Did you have a nice dinner?
NO WAIT, Your birthday is FRIDAY isn't it?
To: Corin Stormhands
Well but if you open it again and go to Tool-options-preferences, you can keep it from starting up when you start up the machine, and disable the other stuff that is tied to outlook, like notification of messages, click all the tabs and select the option where it does the least.

Since your birthday has already begun on the East Coast, allow me to be the first:
Happy Birthday Hair!
To: HairOfTheDog
I think that's what I just did. We'll see what happens.
Will I need to do that for each identity on the computer?
To: Corin Stormhands
I am answering computer questions because I try to be more helpful than I am smart (if you can't tell!) I don't know what I am doing really half the time!
I had a good dinner! - Seafood Fettucini! Really good, I didn't get the steak - What a switch!

I have a feeling we'll also have red meat in your honor at Dwarf-Moot.
I need to go. It's almost time for the alarm clock (not quite, but I'll regret staying up this late in the morning).
G'nite and thanks again.
To: Corin Stormhands
Good night corin! Have a good time tomorrow at your moot! - I would love to be a bug on the wall at this moot!
