The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I'll be gone by Easter if all works out... got a great retirement, more than I asked for..

That's great news, g'nad. You've only got a couple more weeks! Does that mean you'll be able to be in MO before the little one arrives?

I put your message in a 6x9" envelope, I folded it in two to keep it nice. I put a postit note on it, telling the chaplain that I actually mailed it, but that it was from you.

I printed the chaplain's address on the envelope using my printer, then applied a "flag" stamp...it looks very nice, if I say so myself! ;-)

You can't have a Frodo standee at dwarf-moot! You need Gimli!

Shall I send you my snail mail address? ;-)

As soon as they make a Gimli standee that doesn't include the Elf!

Thanks for that account of the soldiers in Afghanistan. Teary eyed here!

But the picture of those bookplates cheered me up. Those are outstanding!! Didn't Bear do those for you? GREAT job!

I've got this mint that's called a doublemint.

Like in doublemint gum? Do you have any of that chocolate mint? I've always wanted to try some.

Yes, he did! After I stuck them all in, I managed to re-seal the plastic on the books...you can barely tell they've been opened at all...they'll travel well.

I could really use some prayers or warm wishes to send though...I'm really determined, since reading that article. A nice note would sure brighten someone's day, I bet. I know some of the Hole Dwellers are quite influencial in their congregations...seems like they could get me something to send? Like from their Sunday school classes or something... ;-)

If they could get those to me, I'd be happy to drop them in the mail for the Chaplain to share with our troops. It's more important than anything we send.

Hair said if anyone wanted to send a really elaborate message, she'd print it up with her good printer and snail mail it to me.

How about The Very Middle of Nowhere?

Are you near the Canadian border? You could take a picture of him in front of a 'border crossing'. A well-travelled Frodo!

Lessee, where could I take him? Faneuil Hall, the Bunker Hill Monument, Lexington Green, The North Bridge in Concord? So many possibilities!

I remember thinking that our President at the time wouldn't be believable in either of those roles...

Yeah, but it is easy for me to imagine Dubya in those roles! He WAS a pilot!

do you think if I dug up some mint, left some soil on the roots and stuck 'em in the mail ASAP that Rosie would get them alive?

I know I'm butting in, but try this. Wrap the roots in damp paper towels, cover them with newpapers, put the whole root system, wrappings and all into plastic bags, and tie the bag shut. It should keep for the three or four days it would take to get to Rosie.

If it doesn't work, you're only out the postage, but my guess is that the plants would still be fine.

The 120 mm cannon on an Abrams is a smoothbore because the high velocity would wear a rifled barrel out in short order; and because the round is fin-stabilized and spins on its own without rifling.

Artillery tubes are rifled, and fire projectiles at a much lower velocity... artillery projos are not fin stabilized and require a rifled barrel for accuracy...

Rosie, you could put it in a pot until you can see dirt.

I like the idea - especially as I can think of a lot of ways to use mint! And it's not hard to grow? The only thing is, I should probably wait a week or two, since this week it's been below freezing a lot of the time, and if something was delivered while I was gone at work and sat outside all day, I'm not sure how it would fare. What do you think?

I'm about an hour from the border, maybe a little more. Hmm...it's an idea, though I imagine I might get some funny looks from the border guards! Probably doable, though we might have to explain why we're taking photos! ;-)

Great idea! And I could put together a webpage for it in the Hobbit Hole.

Really? - You would? - Neat! - I will take him out to some of our cool spots on some nice day and get started. My only problem is I am quite attached to him... Could I really send him traveling off on dangerous adventures?
