The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Yes! Mint would do okay and it's easy to grow...at least over here. :) I've got a bunch of oregano growing around my mailbox and near the front entrance. My lemon balm is invading the back yard around half of a pine tree that needs to be chipped. How about some chives for a vertical feature? Then there's purple basil...you'd have to plant basils every year. Ooooh, let me write this down. We're turning part of the front between the garage and the walk into an herb garden. Are all of those (except the basil) perenials? Can I plant them yet this spring?
To: Wneighbor; Overtaxed
Maybe I'll try adding some soil there so it at least drains better. And I'll have to do some checking to see what shrubs would work here!
I just really need to do SOMETHING. Last year I was pretty much a wreck emotionally 'cause of Mom, and I barely did anything at all. I still have leaves to rake from last fall. Sad, I know. But hopefully I can make up for it this year.

My mint even looked green covered with snow this winter. Yes, just plant what's in the pot in the yard. And Corin, it will do well in damp soil.
BUT CAUTION! It's like one of the most invasive plants known to man. However, if you put in in an area like a low place with no precious plants around it you can let it go and mow it when it gets where you don't want it. I thought about suggesting it for some of your bog but not knowing what else was there it might become a nuisance you'd hate me for forever.

Mint, oregano, chives, and lemon balm are perenial. My catnip puts out by itself every year. I even had some thyme survive the winter.
You could go look at herbs at the plant place and try a few that you like the smell/taste of. I'd like to try a laurel tree again (I killed one two summers ago)...bay leaves are expensive in the store!

Yep! Those would be wonderful. AGAIN! I'm ignorant about Vermont planting. Oregano is Mediterranean. It might have to be an annual for you. BUT it's beautiful and inexpensive, you could put it out every year like the basil. I bet chives would take off and do great as a perenial too though!
I'm still having lemon balm trouble in my new place. I put some out and it looks VERY unhappy. It grew okay at home. I don't know what the deal is here. Wish you could send me some that's going good OT.
And I've got hoards of spearmint that I could dig up and send to Corin and Rosie.... if we could keep it alive in the mail.

Okay Rosie, I just remembered. My favorite place for mail ordering herbs is in Canada. They have a great Q&A on their website. I don't know how to post a link. Go to richters.com.
Corin, you might want to check that out too.

All I can say is, they'd better not pull any of that "There's a drought, so we're putting water bans on everyone" this summer.
Drought my keester! With all the snow and rain this winter, we ought to be nice and caught up by now!

Autumn will be 3 this week, and she's up at 6am like clockwork, without fail, every single day.
Luckily, I'm an early riser, so it's not an issue.
Jess, on the other hand, has NEVER been a morning person, so it's slightly more of a drag for her.

I put some out and it looks VERY unhappy. It grew okay at home. I don't know what the deal is here. The stuff I have at my house is striking out on it's own. This is the wooded lot with partial shade. I put some out at The House (sunshine most of the day) and it lost out to the chives.

So, I wouldn't want the mint up front around the azaleas (and where I put the rosemary and the rhododendron)?

The old place had more of a clay soil. It's sandier here and does NOT drain well at all. The top 3 inches stays dry as a bone but it's damp and too dense below. I've had trouble with roots rotting despite the dryness. ARGH! Working on it. Building in compost. Takes too much time. ARGH! (again for good measure)

*shudder*
I am very fortunate that Becky is like me. She stays up late (always a battle to get her to go to bed), but she'll sleep in until 10am if you let her!

I don't think mint would kill out those larger plants if they are well established.... ... but, not sure. I planted it around assorted shrub type things back home and it worked.

"I love the part at the spaceport. And during the fight when the guy keep narrating - I think he's embedded!"LOL! He was embedded wasn't he? Hehehe... I just love that movie for some reason. Yes, it's cheesy, but I just love it.

Maybe one day, when we're all intermarried.I married into a different race, my wife is female. ;^D
Seriously, she's part Ay-rab, so I've done my part to help bring about Middle East peace. ;^)
