Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I still have ice storm damage to clear up. Reckon I should take down what's left of that maple before it falls on the power line.

LOL, well yeah. I don't intend to be a purist about it. Just want to give a few out for Christmas next year. And sew them up fast and easy. Maybe after I learn to do it on machine I will want to try by hand. I am a novice here. I have made lots of clothes for myself and for my daughter, and other things, years ago, but never a quilt. Since I am buying a new machine I thought I would find one that made quilting easiest, if there is such a thing. Doing some research now. The best place on the planet though for info on anything, you know, is here, on FR. I really want to make some ornamental quilted wall hangings for gifts.

Do you think they'll replay the war tonight? Anyone want to chat/view the war? Don't mean to funkle the thread but I am anyway. I have to get a net connection back at home so I can chat/view!!!

Does your house face west?
Let me think about it for a while. If you like the rock garden, go for it! I'm not familiar with what grows well in Vermont but I think you need.....a shrubbery!

Shame on me for not knowing my swoonies: Oded FehrOh yeah!!

Okay, I confess, I've shortcutted on my daughter's bed comforter. Although I sew a lot I can't say I have tons of experience with the machine quilting part. From doing Myranda's comforter the one thing I determined was that I needed more space on the sewing arm area. Bunching the thing up in the machine was impossible in the middle of the comforter. I ended up machining the edges and then doing hand stitching in the middle. I doubt this helps you much. And I think you're talking about smaller things than bedding. So, probably no help here.

Between watching the live thread and daylight savings, I'm a little out of this morning.SSQ was watching the CentCom briefing at 7:15 this morning, I sat up, looked at it and fell unconscious again until he brought me coffee at 9:30 I'd been up til 2:30 am watching the guys at the palace waving their Georgia Bulldogs flag! Col. David Perkins said he wanted to go into Sadaam's gold plated bathroom and take a shower, the let his guys have showers, too! Col. David Hunt on Fox was having a great time talking to Perkins; I guess Hunt was Perkins' commander at one time.
Sounds like there are some anti-Sadaam uprisings going on within areas of the city. The Fedayeen are TOAST!

Does your house face west? You know...I'm not sure! I THINK it faces east, actually. Does that bode ill for any gardening plans?

One that looks nice...and not too expensive?

Good morning! - I sure slept in! - Went back to bed after feeding horses till nearly 8:00! - What a Sloth!
Apparently the Project Elanor thing yesterday got rained on pretty hard, and they didn't get completely done. I fear from the report that Poor Sean spent the day with the 14-17 year old girls from the theater.
TORN put my report up More Sean Astin Reports, after three other reports. (I am River Daughter). HA! It is funny to hear different accounts of an even I was actually at. Some of the reports sound like what I saw and some I read and say "HUH?" Clowns? - no.... they did not say clowns, that doesn't even make sense... they said Elves!.

I'm kind of with OT on the issue of what grows in your growing season. But, definitely some shrublike something near the house.
OT, what do you think? I think she could have a mint patch growing nicely between the door we see on the left and the outcropping from the house just to the right of the door. Then you could kick the mint going in and out and it would smell good. Mint grows everywhere as a perenial doesn't it?
I like the color and texture of wormwood. I think it might grow up there. You might put some of that at another place on that side of the house.
One thing I would add. I decided to do away with grass in an area one time and it wasn't good. I spent the next 10 years trying to rid the area of weeds. And the last 5 of those trying to get good grass back without putting down sod. Plan on a good ground cover immediately upon taking out the grass if you decide to do that.

Didn't remember until I was pulling into the parking lot and people were obviously almost ready to LEAVE instead of just coming in!In his sermon at 5:30 Mass yesterday, our Pastor was saying he got a kick out of this time of year watching people pull in as Mass is letting out. Thankfully, we have the evening Mass, so folks were able to come back for it.

No, you were very helpful. I intend to start on the smaller stuff, but I certainly want to be able to do a big thing too. Thanks, that is something I will need to look at. I just don't want to spend 2 hundred on a machine to find out I really want the one for 3 hundred later, you know? And I'm finding all kinds of info I know nothing about..like computerized machines. I have a lot of looking and reading to do.

We're actually getting SNOW today, if you can believe it.I was just checking weather.com. We're supposed to get an inch or so this afternoon, 4-6 inches tonight and another inch or so tomorrow. ARRGH!!!
I hope all those adults up here who have been bitching for years that the winters aren't like when they were a kid are SATISFIED NOW!!! But I bet you they won't think of them as fondly anymore. When they were kids, they just played in the snow; now they have to do the work their parents used to complain about! Heh, heh.
To: Corin Stormhands
Funkle alert, but I can't resist.
I figger, we're at war, I don't have time for stupid people.
You can be my hero of the day for that one Corin!!!

What an unbelievable night! Yup. Was listening to the guy filling in for Paul Harvey this week. He said that somewhere (not sure where) our troops were facing resistance from some snipers in a clock tower...then he deadpanned "There is no longer a clock tower."
Ha! 'bout spewed coffee on the windshield.

But, definitely some shrublike something near the house. I'm sure I could find something like that at a greenhouse in a month or so. It would make it look a lot less sparse, no? Here's my one concern, though... (Keep in mind I'm a gardening ignoramous...) The way the roof is shaped, all water running off the roof comes down right there in front of the house. Would that have an adverse affect on anything I planted?
I can't really plant much further out (along the road), unfortunately. Or if I do, it will have to be annuals...the snow plow does a destructo act on the first foot or two of grass every year.!
To: RosieCotton
Good luck Rosie. But I'm not the one to give any gardening advice. Maybe in 20 or so years...
To: My back yard
Too bad we can't go see demos and discuus this together. Not for your enlightenment but for mine. I've been thinking of buying a new machine for about 5 years but just never have the time to go see what I really want. And now, I sew on a 1955 model Singer portable that my mom bought used in 1959. Its a workhorse though.
