The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Hi Corin, how was the PRC today? Wet! But it was okay 'cause I didn't have to actually go into town.

Did you know that I'm the main character in one of Pournelle's books? What?
I am having these sudden visions of you as John Christian Falkenburg.
Hi all! I just figured my taxes. Currently I owe $500, which is not good... we're working on seeing whether I can claim myself or not.

FROM TORN:
Peter Jackson Nixes Oscars As Well
3/20/03, 2:59 pm EST - Xoanon
From USA Today: Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson is opting to stay in New Zealand, where he's filming the third Rings film, rather than risk getting delayed in returning to the production. [More]
(We will get confirmation on this ASAP -Xo)
Cate Blanchett Nixes Oscars -UPDATE-
3/20/03, 2:56 pm EST - Xoanon
Peej writes: I have just heard on BBC3 in the UK that Cate has pulled out of the Oscars, stating that she does not want to leave her child in the current situation.
Update: Ananova is reporting that Cate Blanchett WILL attend...so it remains to be seen what will happen. [More]
From the Ananova story:
Will Smith drops out of Oscars
Will Smith has announced he will not be attending the Oscars because of the war against Iraq.
The actor has asked to be excused from Sunday's ceremony, claiming that he feels uncomfortable attending.
It is thought he is the first Hollywood star to pull out of the annual event, which is to go ahead without its traditional red carpet arrivals.
In a statement, Smith's publicist Stan Rosenfield said: "He felt uncomfortable in attending and respectfully asked to be excused.
"There's no agenda, there's no speeches. He just felt uncomfortable in attending."
Cate Blanchett is also rumoured to have dropped out of the Los Angeles ceremony, where she is set to present one of the awards.
But her spokeswoman told Variety.com the actress is still planning to attend.

This set of Oscars is going to be terribly boring.

Good evening everyone!
I just wanted to stop by and share a laugh.
Becky just got the Jonah DVD today and when I asked her if she remembered the song, she sang: "Jonah was a Hobbit, ooh, ohh!"
I just laughed and laughed! :)

Less than 100 posts on a weekday? Inconceivable!
You'd think there's a war on, or something.

BiR: you're not kidding, generally it takes quite a while to catch up, usually to the point that trying to post seems to be moot.
Still, glad to know all is well in the Hole and Ruthie is still serving up platters of goodies each morning. Thanks RMD.

Dust off your copy of
Exiles to Glory.
When I was in the Army, back in the late '80's, I was in line at the PX and saw that book in the checkout line. I picked it up and read the back of it. It felt like the bottom dropped out of the world when I read the main character's name, it was mine.
Very wierd.

[shrugs] I have been here to talk if anyone wanted to talk more quietly here in the Shire, but everyone is off listening to the strange news from Bree!
I posted a thread. Our normally liberal local TV commentator wrote an excellent bit about protesting. This in a town that loves protests. Check it out!

glad to know all is well in the HoleYes, indeed, it is very comforting to have this little sanctuary in an uncertain world.
Today was the first day in a long time I didn't actually lurk here all day... I was too busy trying to keep up with the live war thread on the news side. Didn't want to spread my limited Internet access at work too thin.
To: HairOfTheDog
We had a quiet anti-war protest here in Austin today... a crowd of about 700-800 gathered at the University, moved to the state capitol building, then marched down Congress Ave. (main street in downtown Austin). No arrests, little commotion (except for traffic disruptions). All in all, a rather ruly protest.

I read the main character's name, it was mine. That's kinda cool!
I'm going to try to check my copies of AoE before Saturday. I'm not sure if Saturday evening will be a good time for me though, as Rose is going to have to work half a day on Saturday and all of Sunday (not work-work, but taking training classes for her work). So, we may be out later than normal Saturday night... but if all goes well we *should* be home in time.
