The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Well, Saddamuman has been ordered to vacate Orthancdad.

The dark Lord still sits in his palace in Riyadh-Dur, when do we move against him?

I just found this site linked on Alklhin's "Brazos de Dios" site. I had heard about these folks last week because a Girl Scout Troop in Arlington had send several boxes to some soldiers.

The site gives some specific info about stuff to send and how to package it. This will be helpful for those of us sending stuff to you , 2J. Y'all can check it out HERE

Well, now that I have looked for it, I remember that I gave my theatrical FoTR to Ramius, so it isn't here. Rats! If there is time, I can mail it later, but perhaps someone else is already sending one. I will send you Minority Report.

Maybe g'nad or your friend can answer this (ask him?)... I am picturing that DVD players and TVs are probably in a common area, or several common areas, so that multiple copies of the same movies would not really be needed. If that is true, it might not hurt to ask if there are movies they already have multiple copies of, and others that would be requested? - I don't know. If each tent has a TV and DVD player, then they may want multiple copies of the same movies.

If there is a need, it would be perhaps good to buy and send a copy of the Extended FoTR, and you might find one used cheap.... In fact we may find it cheap even new.

I can send you more money really any time.... I think how much depends on what we decide to do.... if we are buying lots of different books and movies that happen to be available where you are, or sending a 'very LoTR' set of boxes with lots of copies of just those books and movies, even if we have to buy them new.

Which do we want to do? Maybe we don't know till g'nad and the chaplain answer the question about what they need.

Lightweight games.... hmmm.... decks of cards are easy.

you would be correct, though I'm at a loss as to how many tents, and how many soldiers... the Army hauls alot more stuff for creature comforts...

When I was in SA for DS1, we had 1 TV/VCR for 800 Marines, and that one went away at Christmas... I gotta believe in this day and age the Army has a few more than that... fwiw, I never saw a TV for 8 months...

I'd send no more than two copies of a movie... they can be circulated around fairly easily...

WHAT A GREAT LIST!!!

Oops! One of the first things I noticed not to send was shaving cream! Ha! I got it off another list of things TO send and it was approved by the chaplain! I can't win for loosing!

Oh well, if it explodes, it won't really hurt anything...no food items in this box, just bottles of stuff. We'll just have to see how it goes.

OK 2J.... With that in mind maybe you can ask the chaplain to describe their situation (how many common areas, and how well stocked are they already) ...If there are movies they already have a lot of copies of, or if they would like *anything*, including multiple copies of stuff. As popular as LoTR is, they may already be up to their ears in it, but have requests for other movies, maybe newer releases.

Ok. I'll email him. Let me get these packages out and email him about these first...then I'll ask him in a couple of days. I'll tell him we're organizing another shipment and need some specific information.

OK?

I'm going here in a sec.

Unfortunately, no. I wish I could! I used to bake cookies for a friend of mine years and years ago, at Barksdale. He always wrote and told me how popular he was when he got the boxes with my cookies in them.

Alas...the times have changed.

Oops! One of the first things I noticed not to send was shaving cream!

They mentioned the CANS of shaving cream. I think they make shaving cream in the squeeze tubes, which wouldn't be under any pressure.

Your note about the boxes got me to thinking. There is a 'box-making' company about a half an hour from here. I'll call them to see if they might donate some boxes for the 'cause'! It looks as though you're using boxes that are not very large, is that right? Do you have the dimensions of the boxes when they're up and ready to mail?

Dune and Children of Dune were on last night. Sci-fi channel is doing a bang-up job with these productions.

I wondered if any of our HHD's would be watching Children of Dune last night. I read Dune years and years ago, and unfortunately William Hurt as Duke Leto puts me to sleep :o but I am enjoying Children of Dune. I just wish I didn't have to put up with Susan Sarandon.....ugh.

"Gifts from Home...with love". Then USA.

How awesome! Just think how the military folks feel when receiving a box like that.

In addition to heping you, I'm going to try to convince Clare to suggest it as a Troop Activity for Girl Scouts. We could get the names of some of the folks from our Parish and the Parish where he Troop meets and send the boxes to them. I know that you have ot have a specific name to send a box to, not just 'any soldier'.

Ewww!! I don't think the Chaplain wants GREEN bread in the desert, even though there's not much else green and growing there!
