Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I'm cutting and pasting the article into an email for you if that is all right... You can tell they are quite proud of themselves for the way it was handled.

Thanks for the poem. That's a keeper.
I know my M-I-L is coming here because she believes it's the best thing for her. And it is. There's a lot of family history that goes to why she can't stay with any of the kids in NC. Plus, my wife is the next to youngest, but has always been the responsible one.
And, I know it won't really be that bad. It's just not the way I would've wished for it to work out. Jr. is resistant, but I finally got him to tell me why. He doesn't want her to die in our house. It's actually pretty healthy that a 13-year-old could articulate that.
She'll defintely have the run on the house plants. My wife can kill plastic.
And, I won't mind her help outside. I just want the control of what goes where, etc.

You are hereby formally challenged to duel by karaoke...name your Barry Manilow tune.HA! - Barry Manilow is not my usual scene, but I will try anything once.
I do some Elton John, Some of The Animals, and I can do a mean "Lion Sleeps Tonight".
For chick songs I do the easier Alanis Morrisette and Melissa Etheridge.
I would do more Jimmy Buffett, but the bars don't often have it!

This means I have to take her out drinking tonight. There will likely be karaoke involved kewl... the drinkin' I mean...which reminds me...
after I got done crackin' skulls in Kali on Wednesday, I went to the pub across the street from my hotel for a-pint-or-six and a plate of bangers and mashed... my hunger sated, I went back to the hotel bar to meet up with a Marine Staff Sergeant and Warrant Officer who we at the meeting as well...(we were the only jarheads)...
I proceeded to go thru pints at a cyclic rate, much to alarm of the young staff sergeant... I then asked the young pretty bartender if she knew how to make an Irish Car Bomb... she replied excitedly that she loved them, and made me six in the course of an hour and a half... that along with about four or five other concoctions from her parner were on the house...in four hours of drinkin' I had prob'ly a dozen pints, plus the mixed drinks, two shots of Jagermeister, and a glass (12 oz) of scotch... my bar tab was $22... I said, "kewl"...
Now they had karaoke goin' on, but they didn't have anything I cared to do... so I grabbed the mic, and did And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda acapella... it was well received...
at the end of the night, I wasn't slurring and was steady on my feet... and the young staff sergeant, who'd had maybe a third of what I'd had, said "sir, you ain't human..."
I responded, "when did you figure that out?"
four hours later I was at the airport... yesterday was a looooong day...

One of our seafood restaurants/bars had a Karaoke contest last summer.
I got second place with "Girlfriend is Better" by Talking Heads.
If only I had worn my over-sized grey suit, I think I could have gotten first place!

Funny thing about that poll is that it is a mature poll - 78,000 replies, and TORN only posted it a half hour ago buried as an afterthought. It may be a fairly honest win for TTT.
Voting Odds And Ends
3/14/03, 10:42 am EST - Demosthenes
More than 30,000 Yahooligans voted for their favorite movies of 2002, and according to the results Sauron was the baddest bad guy of 2002. Check out all the categories here. Also on the subject of polls, CNN is running a best film poll for the Academy Awards. Wander on over and vote for your choice. [More]
