Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Help me out with the CD-burner terminology and what we would also need to burn (write?) DVDs. Is that the CD-RW/DVD option? MUST you be able to write DVDs? A DVD R/W is the priciest type of drive. There are also drives that read DVD, but WRITE CDs. Finally, there is the CD-only burner. Make sure you're getting only what you need now, because the more expensive stuff will only be cheaper in the future.
I've seen some great buys on laptops at Costco, but it all depends on what they just got in, and varies from store to store. Marl has had great luck with a Toshiba I found for her there at $900. It wasn't the top of the line, but it was $400 cheaper than the best price I found online.
As far as brands go, I have no problem recommending Dell, IBM, and Toshiba. Compaq and HP have come down in quality from their previous heights, IMHO.
Do some comparison shopping at CNET. Often some store will have a closeout of a particular model, or they got some good deal from a supplier. One store may have a bargain that another won't.
I hope that helps. What's the configuration of your home system? That will determine how much it can be ugraded, and whether an upgrade is the best way to go or not.

Billy Boyd was there, don't know who else. I thought I heard that Sean Astin was going to be presenting one of the nominees or something. Of course I was just changing the channel to go back to Die Hard 2, so I missed the whole announcement.
To: HairOfTheDog
Yeah! LOL
I'm going to take a bath...be back later to check the news and then say goodnight.

I think Clint Eastwood is having a heart attack on stage. He can't breathe!

I would not recommend that you buy a top-of-the-line portable for a 13-year-old, either. HOWEVER ...
Check out Dell's refurbs. You should be able to get a nice Latitude CPxJ650 or so for a reasonable price, and with some warranty still left on it.
As for optical drive burners:
I would not, at this time, recommend you spend money on a true DVD burner. They're too expensive, and not every DVD-only player can play a DVD+RW or DVD-R.
I do, however, heartily recommend a CDRW or a DVD-CDRW combo drive. They're great for backing up data, and for storing large amounts of data. A full-length feature movie can be burned to 2 or 3 CD-Rs.
A Dell Latitude CPxJ will run Win95, Win98, Win2k, or WinXP; I recommend WinXP Professional for its stability, recoverability, and expandability. Get a CDRW drive for the machine, and a nice 20gig HDD. If you install Win98, get 128meg of mem or more; if you get WinXP, get 256meg or more.
Good luck on tomorrow's events ... you and yours are in our thoughts.
