The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

FROM TORN!

Towers Extended Edition News
Demosthenes @ 7:38 am EST

Ringer Fan Holbytla writes: I recently accumulated quite a backlog of movie/gaming magazines, and I've been slowly working my way through them. Most have little, if anything, to say about our favorite movies. So imagine my delight to turn to page 14 of the March issue of Cinescape magazine and find an interview with PJ about what to expect in the EE DVD of TT. And yes, Virginia, he says we will get ent draughts!

"There's whimsical stuff with Treebeard that I like a lot, where he's reciting poetry and it's appallingly bad poetry," PJ is quoted as saying. "There's a scene with Merry and Pippin drinking Ent draught, which if you've read the book you know makes them a little bit taller. They being hobbits, they quite like the idea that this magical fluid makes them bigger."

PJ goes on to say that most of the added scenes feature Treebeard or Gollum, which is requiring WETA to create 160 additional computer shots (the entire theatrical version of TT had 800). "I think it's going to follow a similar kind of pattern to what The Fellowship did in the sense that a lot of the scenes that we cut out are basically character development and dialogue scenes. There's not much in the way of action."

Ok, this is what I got planted...

I didn't get anything planted but I hope to get something this week. I need to get my painting done while the rain is holding off!

I want to get some peas, lettuce, spinach, kale and stuff in the ground. Chester the Neighbor Cat is happy....my catnip is putting out big time.

In your old place, or in the new house?

Old place. Haven't broken ground yet, won't for another six weeks. We made a bad choice for financing and went with their in-house mort. co. They have taken forever, are staffed by idjits, have made errors- what a nightmare! Regardless, the contract is now finished and it takes six weeks to get permits and final engineering surveys. *sigh*

We're opting not to 'wire' the new house for a hardwire network, they didn't really know what we were talking about when we asked about "wiring the house for a network". People that clueless aren't going to do a good job anyway. But then I asked a simple electrical wiring question and the sales' rep's jaw just dropped. I want an extra switch in the kitchen, with wire already drawn from the basement, so that I can install under-cabinet lighting as a diy later on (when we can afford it). She blinked at me. "Why would you want a switch with nothing connected to it?". "Nevermind! I'll just do it the hard way, myself, later on!" The housing industry could use a few rocket scientists.

Good morning everyone! I am just going to copy my post from the other thread since I am posting and running this morning. I have a lot to do today and I hope I can pop back in to really thank each and every one of you!!

I was so certain yesterday that my niece was dead and spent the day looking in ditches, canals and abandoned buildings. Thank God I was wrong!! Thank His Holy Name! :)

Here's the post. I'll bring more details when I have them. Thanks again everyone. I love you.

****************************

MICHELLE CAME HOME LAST NIGHT AT 2AM!!! I have no details yet, but apparently she'd been hiding out in a friend's closet this whole time. Grrrr....

Thank you all for your prayers, encouragement and assistance. I have no doubt that without your prayers, the end may have been much different.

Of course, Michelle is now going to have to face some serious consequences (besides the ones from her parents) and the State may intervene and have her placed in a residential treatment facility for runaways.

All that aside, I praise and glorify God in the highest for His mercy and compassion. I lift His Holy Name in honor and rejoice! Michelle is alive and that is all I care about it right now.

I'd been searching abandoned buildings yesterday and there was no time to post. I apologize again, but our family can never thank you enough!!!

Morning Hobbit Hole (sorry if I missed ya on the pings, I gotta make a list)

Another sad day in the Stormhands' household. My cousin passed away last night. It was expected, but not this soon. She'd battled breast cancer for about three years. This was actually a complication from the treatments and surgery.

She lived with my 80-ish year-old aunt in Virginia Beach. Judy was in her 60s. Her son David is currently unemployed in DC -- has his Masters but prefers to tend bar (preferably gay bars) and pretend he's a starving artist (writer).

I don't know about Judy's spiritual condition. She and my aunt were very new age-ish about their religion. Their last fascination was with Edgar Cayce and the "Enlightenment" folks.

Fortunately my mom had gone down yesterday to be with them for a few days, so she was there. Judy wanted to come home and she was able to die there peacefully.

Prayers please for my Mom who is there to help them through the details, for my Aunt Frances who will have to make a life change (she can't afford their house on the Bay) and for my cousin David, who has just lost his Mom and needs prayer for a lot of reasons.

Funny how when I heard this morning, one of the first things I wanted to do was to get here to tell you guys. We spent too much time on the phone this morning we missed Sunday school but are going for second church service.

Luke's surgery is tomorrow a.m. We have to be at the hospital at 6:30. My sister-in-law and mother-in-law are coming later today. So I'm not sure if I'll be back on today. And I'm fairly certain I won't be tomorrow.

I'll check in when I can.

I didn't feel as much missing from TTT as I did in the theatrical release of FOTR. However, I will welcome more Fangorn and more Ents. It's the encounter with Faramir that I thought was hasty and awkward. If I had a "wish", it'd be a scene of rescue of Gandalf post-Balrog as he's in the snow on the Mountain and looks very cold. Gwaihir should fly in and carry him to Lothlorien where Galadriel has his cool new white duds waiting. (I believe that's what happened in the book.)

I love building, and now that I've been in my first custom house for almost two years, I've forgotten the stress and would like to have a go at it again.

We did the wiring ourselves. It was a bear, because DH kept adding more and more switches and circuits. We have two giant breaker boxes. I called it "the house of copper" because the wiring was such a prominent feature, trying to put in everything that we thought we might want later. We put timers on all bathroom heaters, timers where the irons and curling irons would go, lots of fan/vents...on and on. Finally our contractor gave the glare to DH, and said, "Insulation and Dry Wall go in next week". But an electrician would have charged us twenty K to do the kind of wiring DH did (I helped).

Knowing that he might want to add more stuff in years to come, DH put in some plastic pipes where he knew he could access them later and string some wire easily. Considering how technology changes, this is a reasonable thing to do. So we could dig into the walls with little damage and use those pipes if we wanted to.

You can add those pipes yourself if you plan on doing some wiring later.

Take lots of snapshots of the walls before insulation and finishing, and put them in a secure place. This has been a big help, particularly with plumbing. DH could have plumbed the house, and would have done a better job, but there's only so much sweat equity you can manage and still get into your house in one lifetime.
