Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

If they put a pamphlet in the door and left, then stop freaking out this instant! People coming under false pretenses don't care about getting a future sale with a pamphlet to call ADT.
I think you can relax.

Honestly I just don't get what squirrels do to tick people off! I have two walnut trees in the back yard, and in a good year, each will have a couple hundred nuts on them. Then the stupid squirrels from blocks away strip off the nuts and bury them about three weeks before they're mature. I don't think anybody wins. If the tree rats would lay off, I'd leave half the nuts for them.
I won a small battle last year when a late frost killed off most of the buds. The squirrels ignored the trees, and I wound up with ten nuts that year. "Bumper" years net me about two walnuts.

I just think it's wrong for them to be going door to door after dark. It's too late!
Here's a picture of my door...

See the pamphlet? Steve just emailed...on his way home.

We had a big walnut tree where I grew up. I don't like walnuts. Was fun to watch them stow them all away!
To: 2Jedismom
I think it is wrong too, but I don't think you need to still be afraid. I really don't think they would leave a pamphlet of any kind behind if they were not at least 'for real'. If they were there on evil purposes, they have nothing to gain by leaving anything behind. Call and tell them how stupid and scary their visit was tomorrow.
To: 2Jedismom
And, while you have them on the phone, talk to them about a monitored alarm so you don't have to be so afraid if they come back! ;~D
To: HairOfTheDog
I'm gonna! If there is a number on there, I'm gonna call and give 'em a piece of my mind! Tell 'em to blow it out their shorts!
Better yet, I'll get Steve to do it! He'll have a field day!
Ok, I'm getting off line...Steve will be home soon.
To: 2Jedismom
They put a pamphlet in my door...I haven't opened it to get it. Does it say "Watchtower?" ;-)
Have Steve read 'em the riot act. Make 'em give you a free system for scaring you.

Evening!
Wish we were discussing the bombs bursting in air, but I think they're coming...
We went out to dinner, then went to sign up a new membership at a gym. We all need it and Jr. needs to be training for sports.
Then we had a Jr. meltdown. More of the same crap. He asked why I was bossing him around so much. I told him it was because I was tryin' to save his life. Told him that he's in line to be an 8th grader again next year...
But I wasn't all negative. Told him he could do anything he wanted to. Told him he was in control of the situation. He's smart, he's well mannered when he wants to be, he conducts himself well around adults, he has as sophisticated sense of humor.
Told him it was his choice to make. That we would do everything we could to help him. But he has to make the choice, we can't do it for him.
Also told him the tv is coming back out of his room permanently. After an appointment Monday, I told him "do not watch until after school on Friday." Found out tonite he'd been watching every day. His response, "So?"
Bad answer Jr. Bad answer.

I hate to say it, but those door locks are asking for a break-in. Bust the window, reach in, and open the doors. I should know, I learned the hard way myself. A non-window door, wide-angle viewer, and deadbolt locks with a 1 inch throw plus a heavy-duty striker tied in to the 2x4s, is much more secure.
Unexpected knocks on the door after dark unnerve me, too. That's why I turn on the porch light, eyeball them through the viewer, and have a .38 snubbie stuck in my belt in back before I ask what they want.

Hey, all... found some pictures of Tahquamenon Falls in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. First picture is in summer, second picture is virtually the same scene in winter.

Made me feel a little homesick...

Gosh, you are right! I never even considered it!
Well, I turn 40 on the 15th...a new front door sounds like a good present!

Morning, everyone.
I am not joining a gym, but think I ought to get in shape too, some. Going jogging in a few minutes.
Hey Corin, do you know where those statistics are that talk about the relative criminality concerning the blue states vs. the red?
Had a guest here yesterday lunch, to talk about the stock market. He made an aside that the civilized part of the U.S., meaning the part that voted for Gore, doesn't understand that the rural part, and he mentioned the red and blue map, really exists, and his friends don't know how uncivilized and violent the red part of the map is.
Nice guy and bright, but another one that hasn't thought things through. I figure he needs to see those statistics some time soon. Talking to city folks who think they are so broadminded and cosmopolitan, I am often kind of astounded at how insular and narrow minded they really are.

Hey 2J, I have heard more than once of criminals going to the trouble of obtaining police uniforms to gain access to homes for robbery, so getting a piece of paper for the same purpose could be relatively simple by comparison.
I never heard of door to door salesmen working after dark, not even the neighborhood kids.
Early Happy Birthday wishes, though.

Civilized/uncivilized, huh?
Perhaps he hasn't heard the quip that "Civilization makes it safe for stupid people..." to live, to vote, to breed, etc.

Moring OT, are you going to get one of those barrel extensions 300winmag saw?
I am thinking it looks so awkward, I might just as well put up with the noise. Although, with a lily iron on the end, you can probably use it for a harpoon and just spear the things.
