The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

?????!!!??? I've heard AF DI's... sounded like they were at church ice cream social...

Well...rumor has it my TI (as they call 'em in the AF) was kicked out not long after I left for using "racial slurs" with regards to another TI. That's as may be...main problem was just that I was coming from a pretty sheltered environment...I had a very limited knowledge of four letter words at that point. And being yelled at for no real reason was hard to get used to. ;-)

Hmm...I only see a list of programs in use with CTRL+ALT+DEL...I never noticed if I could sort or see how much each was using. I'll have to look at that more closely next time!

That may be all you can see, then...can't remember if ME most resembles 98 or XP.

You haven't installed anything recently, right?

The last thing I remember downloading was some Iampplayer...um..can't remember the name of it. I think that was the last thing I did.

My e-mail will still work and I can still get on Grokster and download and I can play games, but it's slow booting up and Explorer won't come up. Well I suppose it would eventually, but I never let it try for long because it takes forever.

You might try going into control panel, add/remove programs, and see if there are any programs in there you aren't using or don't recognize. If it were me, I'd also download something like AdAware and scan your system for spyware...but some programs like Grokster have spyware built in, and removing all spyware can cause them to stop running.

I'm pretty sure Grokster said they didn't have spyware.

Well I'll go into add/remove again. I had just been in there not too long ago.

How about going into msconfig and unchecking stuff in the startup section.

Yep...also a good idea. Just had to do that on mine. Seems like EVERYbody sets their programs to run SOMETHING on startup. I don't need RealPlayer, Quicktime, MusicMatch...blah blah blah blah blah running anything on startup. If I need 'em I'll start 'em!

I think most of those programs "put themselves" in the startup whey you install them.

Exactly. And not all of them have something within the programs options to stop 'em from running. MSCONFIG is my friend. ;-)

How do I get there again? 300 or Bear told me about it. Do I type it in the run box? Or do I search for it?

I would LOVE to get rid of stuff during startup. So many things are down there now. I never knew how to stop them from doing that.

Oh...someone mentioned MSCONFIG too. I didn't check that out yet. I type that in the run box is it? Will that tell me what is eating up my system?

WINTOP tells you what's running, and how much CPU is being used. MSCONFIG tells you when and where those buggers were loaded, and lets you turn on or off the loading of them.

Windows ME is part of the Win98 family. "Low resources" can either be low RAM (256MB should be considered an acceptable minimum), or the hard drive may be badly fragmented.

So check for strange programs loaded, low RAM, and fragmented hard drive. It could be any or all of them.

"I love my Hydrobics class, but I can't do the deep water stuff. That belt around my middle makes it hard to breathe!! "

We don't use belts; we use those "water-wings" thingies, or else these sort of styrofoam floating thingies that look like dumbells. When I took an outdoor class last summer at a city pool we only had the belts; I didn't like it as well; I'll prolly treat myself to pair of water wings this summer.:)

Hi Dawntreader!

Just got back from a whirl of music rehearsal/shopping. Now I have a few moments to catch up here before beginning this evening's piano lessons.:)

Piano lessons! I miss taking them :-( I've had about 13 years all together while growing up. I'm out of practice right now though. I haven't made time for playing like I should.

How long have you been playing?
