Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

you definitely don't want to know about the Mountain Assault Leaders Course... No. I don't. I think I could've done some training like that when I was younger. But it wouldn't have been easy.
For our college plays we had to build our sets up from the gym floor since we didn't have a theater. My jr. year we did a set that had a "cave" that also had a path across the top. Halfway through the building I was up on top getting used to the space. But the ramp only went "up" as the other side wasn't completed. When I turned to come down. I had to sit and slide down on my butt. By opening night, with the set filled in, it wasn't a problem.
The closest I've ever come to a panic attack was in the St. Louis Arch. No problem going up in the little elevators. But we got to the top and I looked out (you have to lean over to look out). I broke out in a cold sweat and the people with me had to walk me out, one on each side.
I know it's irrational. I know I won't fall. That doesn't matter. And yet, flying has never bother me. Go figure.
Like I said, the neighbor will help with the small stuff. There's just too much risk involved in taking some of them out. Some are prolly 60-80 ft high (and they're oaks).

Actually, Richmond is "used" to that. That's why they built the floodwall. Down in "Shockoe Slip" which is the trendy part of town with cobblestone streets, restaurants, night clubs, etc., they used to get flooded out just about every year. With the floodwall, that's no longer a real problem and they've been thriving.

I always thought I was afraid of heights. But while I was in the Army some friends and I would go rappling on the weekends. I found out that it wasn't heights I was afraid of, but the edges.
Getting over the edge was the big thing. Once that was done the ride down was a blast.

It factors into a lot of things for me. When Jr. was 3 we were in Aspen in the summer and took the cable car up to the top of the mountain. Jr. was sitting on my lap saying "look Daddy. Look!" My wife found a ranger to drive us back down 'cause I told her I was walking.
I'm trying not to let it factor into things like amusement parks either. I don't do roller coasters, so Jr. is a little skittish about them. Although he has no trouble with the really high water park slides. I used to do those with him until I busted my knee open on one. I taught him about velocity and about how the larger you are the faster you will travel. I came off the slide, hit the water, flipped and slammed my knee on the bottom of the pool. It looked worse than it was (it was just a flesh wound), but he got the point.
Still, I get the feeling I'm gonna be puking my way through the Rebel Yell this summer...
To: Corin Stormhands
I love roller coasters, but when I lost my hearing I thought I might have problems cause it screwed up my equilibrium so badly. But I did ok at Silver Dollar City here 'while back...didn't bother me at all.
Now doing things like screwing in a light bulb, or messing with anything on the ceiling is dreadful...if I step up on a chair and look up, I'm just asking to fall! Like being in a barrel, rolling downhill.

I love you too g'nad!
Corin, I am a pilot, and I am terrified of heights. Flyin' is not heights, it's altitude, and it is different. You are still standing on the floor in an airplane. Having talked to a lot of pilots in school, I have found that most pilots admit they are afriad of heights. Don't understand fully the psychology there, but it is true!
I have a really hard time summoning the courage to walk across a high beam without a handrail or something....
You know those 'ropes' courses folk set up to do confidence building? I froze on one once. a high beam (20 feet up?) that we were supposed to get across any way we could, I was too afraid to walk it, so I tried to scoot along on my butt, which is probably much more unstable than walkin' it. But I ended up out in the middle, didn't want to go forward, didn't want to go back! - I eventually did it, but I was shaking and scared, and felt a fool.
Another part of the course had a rope we had to walk across, just as high, but there was another rope over our heads that we could hang onto, (or hang from!). I had no trouble walking across that. go figure.

I wanna know what's going on...g'nad doesn't just go around saying he loves us.
I mean, I know he does...it goes without saying...

Well, we've always considered that there's no logical reason that he "must" ride roller coasters. We'll probably just get around it by taking a friend along.
He did learn to like the "Avalanche" which is a bobsled type coaster. I don't mind that because the initial drop isn't severe.
And I'll do the log flume. But I've only gotten Jr. to do it once.
To: HairOfTheDog
I never got those confidence building "Ropes" courses. I think if someone ever wanted me to do one, I'm pretty sure I'd have enough confidence to tell them to blow it out their shorts, so to speak.

G'nad, I am willing to trust in fate, but you are drivin' 2J to distraction over here! I don't think there's cause to worry. Sounds to me like "big day" is a good thing.

I'd like to look forward to it too, you know!! Gee, I get excited when a new Walmart opens or Krispy Kreme. Looks like you people could fill me in on the exciting part of your lives so I could enjoy them vicariously!

Well, I can see their function, young people should become agile and trusting in their physical abilities. I have a friend whose daughter desperately needs some kind of athletic training. She is eight, and afraid of everything. She loves to ride Bay, but it takes her 30 minutes to summon the courage to transition from the fence rail to the horse. That step of swinging her leg over scares the daylights out of her, and Bay stands still as a log. I stand there patiently and make her do it herself, and it is sad.

Well...we're expecting more ice tonight. Aren't you excited that I might have something new hit the house and/or car?
