The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

They're messy trees... the needles kill the grass around them... they don't have acorns the deer can eat...

Rosie, I am pretty impressed at how cold it is there...-35 and a high of 0. There must be clothes that let you stay out in that, but I wouldn't begin to know what they are. But I had just a great time with my small glimpse of a real winter, I reveled in it.

The persistent pursuit of leftist dogma by academia really drives me crazy, you'd think any fool could look back and see that leftist philosophy has resulted in more human death and suffering in the 20th century than all of previous history combined. Why these people are such slaves to a set of beliefs that guarantees overbearing central authoritarianism is a mystery to me.

Somehow it is not a surprise that it all grows from a French tradition.

The timber has been maintained well... with very few downed trees... in intend to keep it like that...

they get tornados there, but we're in the hills where there's fewer...

Can't use them for fire wood either. But they make a lovely sound when the wind blows through them. They can make you some money, too, and when you clear cut them, it brings in quite a bit of wildlife for awhile.

The 18 wheelers are playing bumper cars in the traffic, from what she told me she saw on the news.

Yup, that's pretty much what we were seeing on the news as well. There were so many auto accidents that the police couldn't keep up with all of them. Parts of I35 were closed, major exit and entrance ramps were closed, it was just a mess. The call-in morning radio program we listen to was full of stories of people stuck in traffic for 2-3 hours, and still no where close to work. I had enough trouble yesterday afternoon driving home while it was coming down, so I didn't want to take any chances.

We get darn few opportunities for a snow day down here anyway, might as well take it when it comes! :)

you think you got tree problems?...

My neighbor and I plan to take care of a quite a bit. But we haven't had a dry Saturday in over a month.

Some of them tho, can't be dropped. There's no clear path to avoid somebody's house. So I gotta get a tree man in with a cherry picker to drop 'em piece by piece.

Last time (we did six trees after Hurricane Fran) I spent $2,000.

I walked down to the river at lunchtime. Dang, that' water's up.

I tried to find a picture or a web cam, but couldn't. I'll post it if I come up with something.

I don't do heights. Call it illogical, call it irrational. But I get vertigo on a step ladder. Plus, I posted my picture a while back. Do you really think I've got any business climbing trees (not to mention ability)?

There's a footbridge that goes out to an island in the middle of the James. I won't do it because it's about as wide as a normal sidewalk and about 40-50 feet over the river.

Of course today, it don't look so high...

I don't mind heights... it's the fallin' I don't care for...

you definitely don't want to know about the Mountain Assault Leaders Course... rock climbing, rappeling, controlled falls... with kit...

hey it was just a suggestion... yuh got a skinny, gullible, expendable neighbor?

The river is really that high?...

River is cresting at about 19 ft. this afternoon. More weather is coming.

Top picture is about 1/4 mile from my office. I'm on the hill up next to the Capitol.

Bottom picture is down at the docks. East of the city. That's the ticket booth for the Annabelle Lee (Riverboat/Dinner cruise).

Still lookin' for an actual shot of the river.
