The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

No, it would not help that they had them yesterday.

I gather from everything you said that you have your hands full with Junior. I just think you are good people, and I like to assure you that someday, he'll be OK.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I know that he'll be okay eventually. I do worry because there's a history of alcoholism in our family. My mom's dad. My dad. I have the same tendency towards addiction, but I'm addicted to sugar...seriesly.

I joke about the fact that "who needs bourbon when there's Rocky Road in the freezer" but it's really true. It's the same pattern as alcoholism. But, I didn't drink when I was younger and I really don't like the hard stuff, so that's not a problem for me.

When the time comes that Jr. thinks he needs a crutch, I just want him to be equipped to not have to have it.

Tolkien Geeks galore will be in Gig Harbor this weekend!

Check out the schedule and the prices and stuff.... I have to admit a lot of it doesn't interest me, but there are a few things! The sword lessons are on Friday afternoon, and Brad Dourif will be there Saturday and Sunday.

Perhaps if we went to a couple things, y'all would enjoy coming out to the Beach House afterwards.... Scott, you could shoot the potato cannon!

I clicked on the link there that is "Attractions" and that better explained some of the events.

The Seattle Knights guys that do swordplay re-enactments sound interesting, and so do the musical guests. Lots of Celtic/Irish music that would be good!

Anybody that challenges the public school system must have something going for him.

Amen to that, brother!! Keeping Jr. in my prayers, too.

Sorry, 2J. I got caught up drawing a house plan and forgot about the Gumbo recipe. I'll do it (later) in the am.

Heya, good to hear about that doctor. Our prayers are with your family and for Jr.

Roads are clear and dry, but I'm one of the few in at work this morning! Yesterday was such a gorgeous day- totally Burl Ives (sp?). The sun came out and the landscape was just spectacular. There is nothing prettier than snow-covered rolling farmland dotted with fences, trees, and red barns. The only thing missing were horse-drawn sleighs.

Sad thing is, that Maryland kids don't know how to have fun. I went to rescue a friends daughter and take her over to her friends house, so I was driving my jeep through the neighborhoods and THERE WERE NO CHILDREN PLAYING IN THE SNOW!! That's insane! It got warm enough yesterday to slush the snow up enough for snowballs, caves, sledding, and snowmen. You'd think with 2+ feet of white stuff on the ground you couldn't keep youngins' out of it! Nope. Maryland kids don't know how to have fun!!

Mornin'

It's a beautiful day here in MD. Sunshine. Snow on the ground. Clear blue skies. Breathtaking!

Good morning! It's foggy here and highs should be in the 50's.

Silly me.

It is also the same tune as "Divas and Lazarus", which I first heard on a Ralph Vaughn Williams CD of his orchestral arrangements of British folk tunes.

British? BRITISH?? *cough**cough**COUGH*!

Just kidding...but the Star of the County Down version, at least, is Irish rather than British (unlike, say, Danny Boy...)

It's a good song, but we're all rather sick of it, as it's a highly requested one at the jam we play at. The rest of the jammers don't play it, but later in the evening everyone kinda takes turns doing songs in small groups while the rest of us grab refreshments and sit down for awhile. We do "Star of the County Down" almost every time.

Si Bheag Si Mor

It's one of the MANY O'Carolan tunes we do. I'm also doing a mandolin duet version of this with a guy here at the college - they're doing a little concert on St. Patrick's Day at noon with a bunch of people contributing. I still don't have the music for his arrangement. Hope it comes through soon!

I just finished watching Casablanca. (sigh) They just don't make movies like that any more.

They don't, do they? I love that movie...

Sigh indeed....

Paul Henreid wasn't bad, either...
