The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Okay so ya gotta empty that bucket sometime, somewhere...

And I don't think we'll be able to train the dog to use the bucket...

If that's the threat, we'll take our chances or leave town.

Kitty help please!! I brought Zoe home from the vet last night. Poor thing couldn't walk straight because she was still somewhat doped up. It was funny, but I felt bad for her! Anyway...Gidget did NOT recognize her and was hissing at her all night and into this morning. I felt so bad because Zoe needed rest and relaxation, not stress.

I know it's because Gidget smells that "vet smell" on her. Well they be ok once that smell finally wear off? And WHEN does that stuff wear off? I just hope I don't come home to find a trashed apt. Although they were only hissing...they never did swipe at one another thank goodness.

And I have to go through this all again when I get Gidget spayed *sigh*

On a positive note, Zoe is taking the pills just fine! The first one was so fast I was sure she didn't swallow it, but she never spat anything out. The one this morning went fine too. She's a trooper!

I thinking along the lines of "occassional availability" as far as electricity is concerned. I've got lamps and oil for lights.

At least that is what I would hope...:-)

I have my wife out getting water, canned foods, and those noodle soup things where you add water. I figure we'll have the food just in case and if we don't need it then we can store it away for hurricane season.

As for sealing up the place, I figure if it gets that bad where we live, then what's the point?

Mine usually take a day or so. Been through that a few times. And it IS heartbreaking! Tam wouldn't let Halvah NEAR him for a few days; meanwhile she just wanted someone to cuddle up with because she was confused and sore. Poor gal!

Kitty litter should help a bit and the dog can go on some newspaper.

I can handle the stink for 72 hours, I think. After that, I may start going a bit insane!

I plan on having 2 or 3 buckets on hand. Stick it in the hall when it gets full and use a fresh one.

I don't know about it being a good thing for a biological attack...but it might work for a chemical attack? I know where I grew up we were supposed to be able to "shelter in place" because of the chemical plants nearby. You seal up the house as best you can, turn off the air and wait...they should have alerts on the the weather alert stations. When the air is clear, they let you know.

I don't know, though...never had to do it.

Yeah, after my initial round of paranoia, I think that's where I am.

Completely normal, DT! Don't worry!

Gidget is freaking out cuz she sees her pal all discombobulated! :)

Things should settle down by this evening or tomorrow morning the latest.

Ok, I'm pretty much screwed anyway as I live in an apartment building. There's the laundry room I guess. But here's what I don't get. How are people going to breathe?? How long are you supposed to stay in that sealed room. Doesn't fresh air need to be getting in or some circulation going on?

Also, on Jason Lewis' show either last night or the night before, a guy from the military called in and said that if chemical agents were released here in MN they would just freeze and crystalize. They would be harmful in the spring when they thawed out, but now it would be harmless. Is that true? He sounded like he knew what he was talking about. He also said that the plastic and duct tape won't really help.

Hm...so maybe in times such as these, I should be very thankful that my dog weighs about ten pounds and doesn't..er...produce much?

But sheltering in place is pretty common. I would definetly do it for a chemical attack...probably for a biological attack too, but wouldn't be as hopeful.

Nuke-You-Ler? Well, since we don't have any underground protection, I imagine I'd shut up in the closet with the boys for a while...but a close hit would probably be pretty hopeless too. Don't know enough about it.

Maybe it's all a big conspiracy put together by the plastic sheeting and duct tape people?
