The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

My dial up couldn't handle the constant buffering thru C-Span's link, so I'll have to wait for the replay tonight.

I read the live thread though, and it was enough to put a serious lump in my throat. I was worried that someone might call the office at that moment and hear me choke back tears!

After these heart-touching scenes nothing really can show the man's heart more. But, on a personal note, there have been so many stories from people since President (then Governor) and Mrs. Bush moved into the neighborhood. And the thing is.... they are people that ANY of us would want for neighbors. Nice, caring people. There are some pain-in-the-tail stories about the Secret Service but you don't even mind having those guys around when you know they're perfecting such a fine family.

I've worked with the SS for previous presidents. They're just doing their job. I actually had more trouble once with Bush41's campaign staff. I told a guy off right in front of my board of directors (they applauded me). Then I told him "your attitude is why you're gonna be unemployed in December."

But even if the SS is a pain, we can be darn sure that Laura doesn't ask them to carry her bags. (although I bet they wouldn't mind for her)

MBY -- Very late catching up on this... your journeys to Big Bend. Wonderful! I can see where Mordor could be there. But, I love it. Do you ever stay in Ft. Davis? We always like to spend a lot of time outside the park also. And we like to go to the state park too. Also, across the border at Presidio. If I had my druthers we'd be living somewhere in the bend now. Alas, jobs are scarce there. Everybody wants to be there.

And then, there is the Cupachabra. And the one I always heard of while growing up in SA...the donkeylady. She supposedly lived out near Floresville somewhere.

Okay, growing up in SA. Were you there in the mid-'70's? I saw that birdman thing. I had never even indulged in any mind-altering substance at the time. And I wasn't alone, I was with my aunt. We both saw *something.* We were in her back yard. She lived just outside Loop 410 on the old Floresville highway.

They're just doing their job.

You are absolutely correct.

Some of them are really city boys are very funny out in the boonies of our area though. When W bought his property he told folks around there he wanted it for the rugged unspoiled terrain. But, it confuses SS guys. They can't seem to keep straight which side of the river is his. They've thrown people on the other side of the river off their own land because they didn't realize they'd gotten over to the wrong side.

Most of them are scared sh**less of running across a rattlesnake.

And when my daughter's young boyfriend accidentally hit a deer and stopped on the gravel road and called for the Department of Public Safety as required by Texas law, he and his friend were surrounded by several SS agents with weapons drawn. They asked a lot of questions and demanded that the boys leave the area - about 2 miles from the ranch. Their pickup windshield was shattered and the highway patrol was already on the way. Pres. Bush was in residence. He ambled out, checked out the deer, talked with the 2 boys and generally waited with them for DPS to arrive. When he found out they'd been down at one of the creeks checking a trot line the President checked out their fish. Generally, the man won over a couple of boys from yellow-dog demo. families. The SS didn't seem to comfortable with this. Of course the boys had a shotgun on the gun rack too. But, when DPS got there they ended up getting to bring the deer home and have a great story.

Still, SS is doing a very good job of looking after them out there considering the area.

P.S. This was the boyfriend that looks like Jar Jar Binks .... not R2D2.

Now, there's something to alert those SS guys.

The previous occupant would've had those boys thrown in jail (or the river)...

I sent Thomas's name to kayak. Check out the 'Day in the Life of President Bush' thread this evening. You'll see the list of family members of Dosers and other Freepers who are being deployed. It is a rather long list, and we're praying for all of them!

Maybe she has a lot of faith in the Commander in Chief, as we do.

Ever have one of those days where it seems like everything you touch goes wrong? I had one.

This is the sort of day when I used to call Mom and vent, cry, whatever I needed. Can't now.

I worked on about four systems today, and three of them have problems now that they didn't have when I started. I swear I did nothing that should have caused issues, but they're messed up just the same. Would be depressing enough any day, but I'm still in the process of making first impressions with a lot of the faculty members, and I flunked pretty badly today, I'd say.

Hope to pick up some pieces tomorrow, but NOT feeling exactly swell right now.

That's why WE'RE here, honey! Everybody has crappy days when nothing turns out right. You just have to go get a good night's sleep and go back in tomorrow; you'll get it figured out!

Tonight, just listen to some nice music, or watch a really great movie; hmmm, anybody got any good movie ideas? ;o)

I'm getting a bit soggy-eyed just reading the descriptions here. I just knew I couldn't handle watching it live.

But I'm heartened to know that those little, natural gestures of kindness and humanity shows that Bush is a genuine human being, and not the phony klinton is.

I'm trying to remember the funeral of the Cardinal in New York City the klintons crashed, where the ringing pro-life sermon hit the klintons like vampires being doused with holy water. That was even more morally uplifting than Hitlery being booed at that memorial.

LOL! You dwarves really know how to cheer a gal up, no? ;-)

Just kidding, g'nad.

Looking over some of the stuff about the Columbia disaster and feeling guilty about complaining. It's just hard when you do your best and STILL cause more problems than you fix. Especially since, as I said before, these are people who are meeting me for the first time. And I messed up, or in any case the computers messed up and I didn't find the solution. And there's nothing I can do until tomorrow, but that leaves them stranded.

Sigh! I worry too much about what people think of me. It's impossible to have EVERYONE like you, but I can't help wishing for it!
