The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

psst, Wneighbor is a lady.....

I know that. I was just wagering that she's a lady with a sense of humor.

Right on both counts. Laughing as I catch back up after lunch! (Hopefully well deoderized.)

only my mom would argue with you. you know, ladies don't wear pants. and ksen, they always wear lots and lots of skivies - way too many for my taste.

Prayers going up for him, Wneighbor.

Thanks so much Suzi. I know we have the finest military in the world... AND that we have a Godly heritage and a Godly nation praying for them - those together will keep our nation.

Living in Texas, in a city, I miss that kind of view.

I know a place in Texas where you can find that view - several as a matter of fact. But, at one of those places you have a friend's place. Incidentally, the president likes that area as well. It might be the night sky.

You mean this one?:

This photo was taken in SWA, but I've spent many moons training at 29 Palms, just South of Ft Irwin...

I love Emrey... when he goes "DI", I have flashbacks... ;o)

Heh heh, I know, in Texas the stars at night are big and bright... that's why I remembered to tack on "in a city". But, still, nothing I've ever seen matches the rural night sky in winter when the temperature is below zero... some of the northern HH'ers probably know what I'm referring to. ;) Doesn't often get below zero here in Texas!

No, you're right about that. I saw those skies when I lived in eastern Washington. But, I already told you what I think of COLD!

However, my favorite Texas night skies rival those. In the desert, out around Marfa and Ft. Davis. There's a reason the observatory is out there. Breathtaking. Someday..........maybe I'll get to live out there.

I know we changed the subject off of Columbia, but I just saw this poem and thought it went perfectly with the picture that was posted earlier. I have no idea if it's been posted already on the Columbia threads:

High Flight by John Gillespie McGee, Jr.
No. 412 Squadron, RCAF

Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds--and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of--wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark or even eagle flew.

And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

hehehe.... Well, if I am not a good girl, God will create a new hell - not with heat but with cold just for me. But, I'm being good so He won't have to bother with that.

I most definitely know! There is just something about stars in the cold. Breathtaking!

Yes, have heard the West Texas night sky is still beautiful. Rose and I have talked about taking a vacation trip out that way, maybe even going to Marfa to see the lights. :)

going to Marfa to see the lights. :)

I always look for those lights when I go. Haven't had the priviledge of seeing them yet so I will be forced to keep trying. LOL The big bend area is my absolute favorite part of my state. Ft. Davis is one of the best kept secrets in Texas. oops, now all the important people in the US know about it.

Important P.S.Uh. Rose might not like it. Most of the stuff we do there involves...... dirt getting on the flesh.

LOL, if we go it will be a vacation, just looking around and seeing the sights, such as they are. We wouldn't plan anything involving dirt, except walking on it. ;)

I love Emrey... when he goes "DI", I have flashbacks... ;o)

He was such a hoot last night! There was a section about how the "Doughboys" got their name. Then it cut to Emrey and he was holding a Pillsbury Doughboy in one hand and a GI Joe in the other. Emrey, as the GI Joe, was yelling at the Doughboy "Stand up straight boy, like you got some", then he picked the Doughboy up and looked at it, and screamed "Oh My God, you don't have any!" SSQ and I just hollered laughing!!

He is so much fun to watch, and the show is really very informative. Our 13 yr old son loves that show! But I could see how someone who has been through Basic with someone like him could have flashbacks!
