The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Good morning OT... and EVERYONE! Hope you all had a great weekend. I'll be catching up on posts this morning while I students take a final exam.

I have piles and piles of homemade empanadas, pineapple and sweet potato, to share with everyone. I went home for the weekend and was blessed with dozens of them. So, I'll share them with ya'll as a little snack before breakfast.

You know, I always watch for those notices in my email from NASA. Friday night I got one telling of the re-entry and flight path, and new I wouldn't get to see it this far south, so I was reading the reports first thing Sat. morning here on FR.

Free Republic....the next best thing to being there!, you know.

I had wished I was on here to talk with all of ya'll on Saturday. But, just as a brief, it was a rough day for Myranda and I. We were in Waco.

Myranda was in state VICA competition Friday and Saturday. Kids were there from all over Texas. The motel where our group was had kids from about 5 other high schools as well. Friday night was a great social time for all of them. They made new friends from other high schools and no one wanted to go to bed of course. Then Saturday morning knocking started on doors before 6 of kids waking up new friends to go have free breakfast and hang out until they had to bus back to the competition at 9. It was a beautiful day so very soon they were in the parking lot playing football and hackey sack with rolls of toilet paper and playing around the pool area.

Then there was the explosion and sky trail. One kid got out his video camera. For a long time we didn't know what it was. Then, some other chaperone came out to say what was on TV. Afterward it was a very sober, solemn group of kids. The rest of the competition was marred. The awards ceremony was heavier than it should have been.

I can't come up with the appropriate adjective for the day. But, you know.

Myranda had done very well in the two things she competed in Friday. But, Saturday was a bust. Nothing worked right for her.

hehehe... well, i fancy myself an amateur herbalist. i can send you a list of substitutes. coffee's been around a while in various forms. chicory, teas. lots of teas. Come on over sometime and I'll let you taste stuff grown in my yard brewed up in hot drinks.

I've had chicory, and some roasted grain type substitutes. But I still think nothing beats the real thing!

SOMEtimes I'm glad I live in modern times... ;-)

Well, I'm pretty much always glad I live in modern times. Not so much because I like the times, but I appreciate the life-span, conveniences of warmth in winter, and even though I have a long term dislike for lots of invasive medical type stuff, I appreciate life-saving techniques and research and knowledge base that we have.

Now, with that said. There is nothing I love more than going out for the longest periods I can and escaping from technology and civilization as we know it. Living off the land is the epitome of a vacation for me.

As for coffee-substitutes, I love some of them. Especially chicory. But, notice, when it gets right down to it.... the souvenier I always get from Hawaii is..... COFFEEEEEEE!

Great article on the art of the bow...

I appreciate your insights Master Osage...

I love the bow, but I'll never drop my axe...
