The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

I think that the groundhog is one of our cutest and most bizarre customs.

I'm still trying to figure out if six more weeks of winter is a good or bad thing in Michigan.

he was much sturdier

Well, that's a relief! ;-)

Hello! Last night we watched Deep Impact with Elijah Wood. It was kind of eerie, what with the loss of the astronauts, but EW did a good job.

I can't let Matthew watch it, though...I'm afraid it might seem too real to him. He is already very familiar with Shoemaker-Levy 9 and what it did to Jupiter. It left scars of Jupiter 2-3 times the size of Earth.

Depends on whether you are an ice-skater, snow-plow driver, or Daffodil farmer.

I think you'll like it...it's not great, but it's ok. I'd never pay to see it in a cinema, and I wouldn't even rent it...but my brother lent it to me, so I watched it.

OK! - I will give it that level of interest! - If I see it on TV, I will check it out!

Along the same lines, I found this to be facinating!!

Looks like they are going to actually try something with a comet! I will be monitoring this...I love stuff like this.

We grilled burgers on the new grill today and worked on raised beds for the garden. I'm exhausted...going to get cleaned up and go to bed.

See you in the morning!

None of the above. All I know is that if we don't get some snow in early May, I can at least guarantee cold rain. Usually on weekends of dressage shows. June to September is never awfully cold, but you start taking your chances come October. This has not been a very snowy winter, but has been one of the coldest. It was 36 today, with the last 2-3 weeks being in the teens or lower.

But spring is officially here, since I've seen my first rototiller commercials. Soon to appear will be the motorcycle commercials, then lawnmowers.

And then leaf blowers, followed by snow tires again. Time flies!

I would sure love to see pictures of your ponies doing dressage sometime, if you would let us see!

Good night all.

I'll be in Palm Beach all day, every day this week, but will try to check in evenings.

See you tomorrow night.

But spring is officially here

Our predicted 1" snowfall turned out to be more like 4", and our snow thrower decided it didn't want to throw today! SSQ just used it to push the snow off to the side of the driveway, and we ended up shoveling the area in front of the mailbox, and the front sidewalk and steps. The air was very soft, though. It was over 30 degrees, but the breeze didn't feel bitter; it was very pleasant! The wind has been blowing very strong for the last few hours, so the wind chills are about 10 degrees lower than air temp. The wind blew out my gas grill when I fired it up this afternoon, but I closed it quickly after lighting it again, and it stay lit!

Spring looks a very long way away from here!

None of the critters are mine, although I own half of Desiree, a TB mare. Marl owns the other half, but we've never decided WHICH half. I've got lots of crummy pictures, and a few good ones. My problem is that I don't have a good place to post them. If you ever have guest photos on your web site, let me know.

The one photo I wanted to take, Marl threatened me with bodily harm if I took it. One of the fillies was having a tough time with teething, and she had already chewed off her mother's tail. Then she proceeded to chew off her mother's FRIEND'S tail. In desperation, Marl put the kid in Aki's field, figuring tails would be safe there.

I little while later, I walk past, and see Aki standing there with this patient, resigned look on his face. There's his kid, chewing on HIS tail. I hurry into the house, and ask Marl for her camera. When I told her why, she ran out of the house, and hustled the filly into the field run by her grumpy old gelding.

But the damage had already been done, and the little girl had already chewed off a good chunk of one side of daddy's tail. It took a year for it to grow back out.

Marl explained that while Aki was never one of those "firery" hare-brained arab stallions, prospective customers did NOT need to know that he was quiet and patient enough to put up with what his kid was dishing out.

check out York... http://www.yorkphoto.com

They have free hosting... all of the photos on my profile, and other pics that I load and post are hosted there, and they have a nice tool you can install for drag and drop uploading of photos.

They shrink big pics to a certain size - a good enough size though, if you click my profile you can see, but the links hold up. The pic at the top of the thread, and my profile pics have been holding steady now for a long time and a lot of hits. That is who 2J uses too.

Hmmm... breakfast. Might be better to wait for the hobbity-types to show up- they set a better table. But you're welcome to share my sausage patties and eggs with low-carb banananananana nut bread (with cream cheese).

Good morning!

What a weekend, eh? I had to take my brother to a bagpipe gig on Saturday morning. I got in the car at about 9:45, turned on the radio to what I thought was gonna be Car Talk, and instead there was a reporter talking about a state of emergency being declared. Sad that it was almost a relief to hear that it was "just" what it turned out to be.
