Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

no one's had a shuttle program before so all these expected shuttle lifetime numbers are just guesses. Yeah - Every mission they knew twice as much about it as they did before. And this will teach us lessons too. Not who to blame I hope, but what we could have done that would have been better, if anything.

Just got to my Mom's house where we can watch the cable coverage. I feel like Sam when he says, "It makes me sad."
I first thought it was sabotage given the Israeli astronaut until I heard that Columbia was 207,000 feet up and going 12,000mph.
It has to be a tragic accident. But that won't stop the Michael Rivero types from spreading the latest conspiracy theory. I hope we don't see pictures of Muslims dancing in the streets over this.

Hello Kevin....
To: HairOfTheDog
I saved what I could.

????
Are we doing the villian's job for them so they don't even have to?
To: HairOfTheDog
Every mission they knew twice as much about it as they did before. Let's hope so!
But then again, with the Challenger disaster back in 1986 junion engineers from Morton Thiokol warned that the o-rings might fail at low temperatures and they launched anyway.
To: 2Jedismom
I tried to figure out how to save it. What did you do?
To: ksen
Hi Kevin. nice to see you.
To: HairOfTheDog
So far just a series of screen captures...

I know they launched anyway!
They thought it would work. Don't forget that. They didn't think people would die. They weighed, debated and fussed over every single piece, part, rivet and o-ring used building that shuttle. They weighed pros and cons and made decisions. Risky decisions... Weighty decisions, My job isn't that hard. And I have respect for people to risk themselves by taking jobs like that.
We ask them to do their best and build us a shuttle. Loyalty doesn't mean squat if we only support them when they are right. If that is how we are gonna be, then who would ever take that challenge?

Remember that show with the junkyard guy who built a rocket ship in his backyard? I think it was on in the late 70's or early 80's.

Gimme a break! There's a "lady" on FoxNews trying to blame this on budget cuts. So guess who would get the blame? Yup, the Republicans.
Boy they never miss a trick, do they?

Oh I support space exploration good or bad. What I don't want to support are the bureacracies and mismanagement. I don't like cost-cutting and "bottom line-isms" when it puts peoples lives in danger needlessly. Space exploration is dangerous enough without some pencil-pushers ignoring valid safety concerns.

Yes, the talking is what makes me nuts. On MSNBC now they are showing close-ups of people standing around pointing at the debris they aren't supposed to go near. ;~D
To: HairOfTheDog
It was Kay Bailey Hutchison! What is she thinking? We need to get over the mindset that says tragedy is caused by too little government spending.
