The Hobbit Hole III - Journey to the Cross-roads!

Posted on 12/17/2002 7:32:02 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Journey to the Cross-roads

The Two Towers Edition

Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)

Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Sean Astin Appointed To Bush Service Council
1/30/03, 3:58 pm EST - Xoanon

Ellen writes: One does not normally expect to hear the words "Frodo's friend Sam" out of the mouth of White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer, but that's exactly what I heard this afternoon when I had the White House press briefing playing in the background on the TV. Seems Sean Astin has been named to serve on the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation. [More]

I think this is a very interesting concept from Richard Taylor:

Richard Taylor Talks Uruk 'Genes'
Xoanon @ 3:49 pm EST

Christopher writes: The January issue of Post has a 2 page interview with Richard Taylor. Not much new here but there is one interesting quote regarding the Uruk-Hai-

"They're just built to kill and they never retreat; hence they had no armor on their backs since Saruman never imagined they'd turn and flee. But, like so many genetic frailties of our own time, as we follow the Uruk-Hai through film three, we'll appreciate that, as Ridley Scott called it so beautifully, they have "accelerated decrepitude." They begin to break down quickly and Saruman hasn't actually quite got his alchemy right. We wanted to build an analogy to the frailties of playing with science in our own world."

I don't recall this from the books but it is an interesting addition. That may also explain the peculiar look of the Uruk shot in the ROTK calender. I just assumed the Uruks were finished and we wouldn't see them much in ROTK. I was puzzled by the shot from the calender. Looks like there is more story for Saruman and the Uruks to come...

HA! When you hack the film into confetti and randomly piece it all back together, undoubtedly a few scenes will get lost on the cutting room floor!

(Good enough?)

I love ya PJ, but I still want to take your scissors and poke you in the butt.

Appliance Repair shop! - Of all things!

I am gonna guess the last few folk they hired were a bit crabby about the tunes and men in the office! They are willing to train. I talked to the guy who answered the phone, he didn't know there was an ad. I read it to him and he laughed out loud! Said that sounded like something the owner would say all right! But that he wasn't available right then.

Too bad. Bunch of fun guys, tunes.... might have gotten me interested in appliance repair!

Appliance repair? How weird...

I had a better day today, although odd. I'm learning to program with Word and it's odd. Basically it's dumbed-down Visual Basic, which is already a dumb language, but that meant Dad and I had something to talk about on the way home from work. I think he's impressed that I know why VB is a stupid language...

Anyway, I'm home tonight and after I do some work and possibly watch Roswell, I'm thinking of... watching some LotR.

BTW, I know they will always find the books better, as they should... what I mean by that is that I would hate for them to resent the source of all this new money.

I look at it this way:

1. The movie will never equal the books, even though the movie is superb.

2. Despite minor quibbles, PJ's adaptation of the book is probably the best attempt possible at doing justice to the book on the screen.

3. PJ and the entire crew seem to be genuine fans of Tolkien's work, and have put heart and soul into making the movie their homage to Tolkien and his universe.

4. Since we are all mortal (and therefore imperfect) men, including JRR Tolkien himself, we should consider ourselves blessed that JRRT wrote the books, PJ turned them into a movie, and uncounted millions of people are grateful to them both.
