Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

When I was little we had the record soundtrack of that movie. Listened to it all the time! Yep, it's very catchy.

What do you think? You think that person means I can just have it? I emailed them asking if that's what they meant...

I still like the songs from the old live action Disney Robin Hood better. Unfortunately it's NOT available on DVD, and hard to find (used) on VHS.
Richard Todd was a cutie, too.

It's interesting, all the talk about the unsuitability of the books for a movie. It would seem to be true, except that these movies capture the feeling of LOTR and even the characters in it so brilliantly.
Notwithstanding that some think Tolkien would have disliked the book being made into a film, he was in fact very interested in LOTR being made into a movie, which is why he sold the rights. It's true, though, that he didn't want Disney to do it.

I am not sure.... I have been away most of the day!
The single wimmin are all depressed about their missing princes, Dan just posted a link to an interview with Gollum, and I just posted a thread of bad English translations of TTT.

I see it was a busy day! LOL!!

OK, one last post before I start packing up here.
I have a couple of questions about the movie: TTT.
Why does Gandalf seem taken aback for a moment when Aragorn calls him Gandalf? He had just seen Merry and Pippin and I'm certain they must have called him the same thing. Treebeard even tells M&P that "Gandalf asked me to keep you safe and safe is where I'll keep you".
The second thing is Brego. When and where is Brego introduced before he comes to "rescue" Aragorn after the Warg attack? Before then, Brego is never seen or mentioned, so how does Aragorn know who the horse is?
Sorry, but this has been on my mind since the first couple of viewings and I should have brought it up at minimoot. I didn't since there really wasn't time to have a post-TTT-viewing chit chat.

Oooh Hooh! An edit mistake! In the book M & P don't meet Gandalf until he comes for some Tree-inforcements for Helm's Deep.
I think the first meeting of Brego got cut from the theatrical release.

Yep, he's giving it to me...just got the email saying so.

I don't know about the Gandalf question, but I asked the Brego question a week or so ago. I believe HairOfTheDog answered it for me.
Aragorn saw Brego at Edoras and set him free from being a work horse. It's going to be in the extended TTT DVD.
Did I remember that right Hair?

Why does Gandalf seem taken aback for a moment when Aragorn calls him Gandalf? He had just seen Merry and Pippin and I'm certain they must have called him the same thing. Treebeard even tells M&P that "Gandalf asked me to keep you safe and safe is where I'll keep you". I think PJ was trying to play that like the books played... Gandalf was a bit weird and disoriented when he first came to them. But I think Gandalf was being a bit tongue-in-cheek. He kinda winks and smiles after he says it.
The second thing is Brego. When and where is Brego introduced before he comes to "rescue" Aragorn after the Warg attack? Before then, Brego is never seen or mentioned, so how does Aragorn know who the horse is?
He knows the horse from a cut scene that we haven't seen yet, where, during the evacuation of Edoras, when Aragorn is in the stables (possibly right after Gandalf rides out?) Aragorn finds the injured and battleshocked horse Brego there.... and taking pity on him, frees him.

I've got it!

YUP! You remembered it right!

Yippeee!! I've been waiting for that! Thanks ecurb!

I was wondering the same thing too. In official Tolkien lore, Brego isn't even a horse.
To: Overtaxed; HairOfTheDog; Dawntreader
You know, I understand that some things had to be cut, but that really sticks out. For anyone who has never read the books, Brego may be a unicorn for all they know! LOL!
Hair - I didn't get the tongue-in-cheek thing with Gandalf, but when I think of the little smirk he Gandalf wears when he says "Gandalf the Gray. That was my name", you are probably right.

I think both of those little things are the kind of stuff the Continuity person is supposed to catch in editing.
