Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Journey to the Cross-roads
The Two Towers Edition
Come on! Come in! -if you would like to have some seedcakes and a pint and relax a while. (If it is a special occasion, we still have a few bottles of the old wineyards left!)
Our first thread ( New Zealander builds Hobbit hole ) reached 4,100 posts, and we thought that was big. Our second thread (The New Hobbit Hole ) held us for over 48,000 posts, and we loved it dearly. We talked about moving to a new thread for the last 38,000 posts, but we are really slow to muster! Finally, the time has come. Tomorrow (at 12:01 am, to be precise!) The Two Towers comes out, and we start a new chapter.

Hehehe....Carolina has this thing about fumbling at the wrong end of the field.

Weren't you the ones talking about the Amber books?I was one of them, yup. Zelazny has been my favorite author since I checked out The Hand of Oberon from my town's library, way back when I was about 11 or 12 years old. Unfortunately, that was the only Zelazny book our library had... so, the next time I went to the bookstore, I picked up every Zelazny paperback that looked like it might be part of the series. Since Avon at that time had released several Zelazny books using the same cover artist and cover design, I not only wound up with the four Amber books then available in paperback, I also got Lord of Light and Doorways in the Sand, both very good books.
Since then I've endeavoured to read every piece of fiction Zelazny has ever written, and for the most part I've succeeded.

So Zelazny is good stuff?
To: Bear_in_RoseBear
Which "first book" of his should a Zelazny newbie start out with? Are they in a sequence?
To: Corin Stormhands
Eww...lol

Well, I think he's good... but then, I'm quirky.
Zelazny only wrote one major series, the Amber series. Well, actually, it was two series, of five books each. His other books were for the most part just single novels (or short story collections). I highly recommend the Amber series for "newbies"... it is one of his best works, and very accessible. The first series consists of (in order) Nine Princes in Amber, The Guns of Avalon, Sign of the Unicorn, The Hand of Oberon, and The Courts of Chaos. The second series consists of Trumps of Doom, Blood of Amber, Sign of Chaos, Knight of Shadows, and Prince of Chaos. There are omnibus editions available at most bookstores that include either the first five books, or all ten books.

Which "first book" of his should a Zelazny newbie start out with? Are they in a sequence? The first one I'm reading, which is the first Amber book, is Nine Princes in Amber. After that is The Guns of Avalon. I am at chapter 3 and I can tell the story is starting to grab me. I probably won't be able to put it down tonight when I start reading again.

Thanks Bear! I am interested in checking them out, not only for myself, but for my son too (he's 11), who loves reading series like that.... He's posessed with Brian Jacques right now, the Redwall series.... Have you heard of it? Definitely on the juvenile side, (anthropomorphic with good animals vs bad animals in a kind of medieval setting) but very well done. I read one and liked it... He just devours books, so I'm always on the lookout for good stuff for him.... He's read LOTR twice already, believe it or not!
*Looks around*
Slow day...or fast, depending on how you look at it.

I probably won't be able to put it down tonight when I start reading again.Heh, yeah... once Corwin hooks up with his sister "Evelyn" the story kinda takes off... like a roller coaster going downhill.

Where's 2JM?Maybe she felt so bad about buying her new shoes that her and her Chuck Taylor's have hit the road. She'll show up on Hair's doorstep any day now.

You're welcome! Hope you both enjoy them! Finding good books to read can always be a problem. :)
Have not heard of the Redwall series, but it sounds interesting...

Where's 2JM?Probably out doing her Imelda Marcos impression? Or trading shoes for whistles and whistles for shoes? ;^)
To: Overtaxed
I'm here! Just been catching up on housework and bills and such. And doing school at the same time!
Matthew had his event at the new Walmart this morning. It was in a very swank part of town so I suppose it's as a deluxe a Walmart as you can get. Has an "Honor system" coffee/snack bar even...just put your cash in and take what you pay for.
Anyway, he was part of the honor guard. He carried the Oklahoma flag. We had to get up at 5:30am to be there on time and I feel positively stuporous.
I'll post pictures later...possibly tomorrow when I have my eyes open. ¦~0
To: Bear_in_RoseBear; ksen
I still get aggravated with Corwin's whole family
To: 2Jedismom
Oh yeah....I forgot about the Walmart thing. Glad to know you didn't get into too much trouble over those Chuck Taylors.
