AMERICA - The Right Way!! (WEEKEND EDITION - Days 686 and 687) [Remember the Trade Center!!]
Various News Sources and FReepers | December 7, 2002 | All of Us

Posted on 12/07/2002 4:28:54 AM PST by Chairman_December_19th_Society

We will not tire, we will not falter, and we will not fail! [President Bush]

Good morning!! Do not let the victims of the attacks on New York and Washington, nor the brave members of our Nation's military who have given their lives to protect our freedom, die in vain!!

GLOBAL WARNING ACTIVIST ALERT!!

December 7 record low temperature:

Washington Dulles Airport - former record: 18 (set various years)
Washington Dulles Airport - new record: 3 (set in 2002)

Other temperatures around the Washington metro area:

Washington: 21 [not a new record]
Richmond: 21
Petersburg: 18
Patuxent River: 14
Roanoke: 13
Fredericksburg: 12
Charlottesville: 12
Lynchburg: 12
Manassas: 0 [ZERO]

Here, at the cottage: a nice, balmy 9.9

Question for the global warming people: considering that current low temperature records for the day were not simply broken, but crushed, does this fit your "models"? Hmmm?

In the news:

Runoff election day in Louisiana. And what would an election be if it didn't have a Criminal Party vote buying scandal? Landrieu is accused of trying to buy military votes with $10 Thanksgiving food gift certificates. The claim is reported in The Washington Times, and comes from Gen. George Peyton Cole, Jr., retired.

North Carolina has activated the National Guard to help storm victims.

And one of the hottest toys this Christmas shopping season? A talking President Bush doll. The Daily News reports the doll says "17 powerful and patriotic phrases," including:

"Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot shake the foundation of America."

"I will not yield. I will not rest. I will not relent in waging this struggle for freedom and security for the American people."

And what would a President Bush doll be without a mangled phrase? They included: "I will not hold this nation hostile."

Reportedly the manufacturer is also planning dolls for JFK, and President Reagan.

[They are also planning one for UOx42, but it is not clear whether one of the phrases for that doll would be: "I never had sex with that woman."]

For AMERICA - The Right Way, I remain yours in the Cause, the Chairman.

I guess we might have to re-open FReeper General Hospital. I have a touch of cold myself.

Oh, and good morning everyone!

Get well! That's an order.

So glad for you in getting power back! I just got back my phone/modem after 36 hours (for the SECOND time), and getting back on FR and reading all the news and comments I missed is like a drink of cool water for this thirsting woman.

I have to maintain that it was all about sugar. Northern Louisiana doesn't have the industry and it doesn't have the culture of sugar, but it has the feeling for it, and the tradition of it.

From my time living in Louisiana, there are four things that are important to the state, which are (in rough order of importance):

Oil
Sugar
Beer
Rice

Many folks I knew had a saying:

"Drink beer and drive fast." (Went to #1 and #3.)

Good afternoon, everyone! Went to take my mom the paper this morning and had a nice visit.

Guenevere, I think that O'Neill lost his tempre and released the info early, from what I could tell. The President should have held off talking to him until next week, IMHO. Of course, I don't know what all is going on.

Also, Landrieu made a very smart decision to keep the head Rats out of Louisiana, so she could be poor little Mary being picked on by all these powerful pepople...and on top of that, the sugar lie was not refuted strongly enough.

I think those three things...unemployment/O'Neill, fake underdog status, and the sugar lie...all helped do Terrell in.

Well, we will learn from this and do better next time. Nothing is guaranteed in politics.

Certainly oil, beets, and all are important to Louisiana. But no single issue there has the emotion of sugar. I used the examples of "burning churches" and "abortion" to illustrate this. You could poll NYC and come up with a thousand opinions and matters of concern. Taxes, crime, and rent control will top the list, but you'll never get the emotion -- and subsequent demagoguery about it -- as you will from abortion, for example.

Some issues are charged. Sugar is the one in Louisiana.

The point is that the campaign turned on a local issue. The strategy was wrong. In the end, Landrieu had the right strategy. She negated support of the President as an issue by praising him to the skies, then she turned sharply Louisiana by bringing up sugar. Terrell had no reply. She tried to deflect the demogog with the lanaguage of policy. Sometimes only some good demagoguery will do. Especially in La, and especially with sugar.

P.S. Don't forget your "toter" (do they use that one in La? I learned it in South Carolina -- the one you take with you in the car).

Some issues are charged. Sugar is the one in Louisiana.

Sugar is the one this year.

However, try messing with Louisiana's oil severance package. That happened in 1985 - coincident with a collapse in the oil market. It made this sugar issue the equivalent of a daisy cutter next to a thermonuclear explosion (the oil issue).

Basically - outsiders often don't understand Louisiana politics. There are three fundamental rules:

1. There is Louisiana, and everything else is a foreign country.

2. Louisiana politics is run by Louisianians.

3. Foreign countries (see #1 and #2) must not mess with, or be perceived as messing with, the "internal affairs" of Louisiana.

Landrieu took advantage of a lie that fit into the three rules above, and capitalized because a willing media (read NOLA television and the Times-Picayune States Item) was unwilling to expose the truth).

If the media are crowing about her victory today - I haven't watched, but I am willing to bet they are - they have every right to do so. By failing to carry out their fundamental duty to keep the public informed of news, they manipulated the outcome.

Landrieu will realize that her election yesterday was due to the corrupt assistance of the media, and she will be beholden to them. Thus, she will be expected to carry the water of the leftist agenda that is in the ascendency with the Criminal Party.

Landrieu has no choice. She must turn the steering wheel hard to the left.

I think I need some umph. I've been trying to deal with septic tank problems last night and today. Ugh!

The good news is that the Titans are going to beat Peyton Manning and the Colts -- AGAIN!

Iowa to the Orange Bowl. Half the state had already purchased Travel, Lodging, Ticket packages to Pasadena. Look for really good deals on Rose Bowl Tickets on ebay.

I'm a little disappointed that the Rose Bowl is not Iowa vs. Washington State. So, who do the Hawkeyes play? I looked it up last night, but forgot already.

According to the info I've read elsewhere here today, the Hawks will be playing USC.

Even though Washington State beat USC, Iowa would be better off playing them. USC is very, very good. I have a website that is a compilation of over 60 different computer polls. They have USC ranked #2. Tough game for the Hawkeyes.

Had a step back into history yesterday. Took a cruise on the USS Potomac - FDR's presidental yacht. The story of how the Potomac came to be berthed in Oakland, CA is very strange and I don't remember all of it, except for the most interesting part when a conglomerate of drug dealers purchased it. During his narrative, the story teller did say that no one knew for sure if the Potomac had ever been used to carry drugs.

One the humorous side, a gentleman wearing a cloaked overcoat, hat and sporting a looong cigarette holder with cigarette welcomed everyone aboard. When he shook my hand, I said, "Mr. President, how nice to see you again. The last time I saw you was at your Monument in Washington, D.C." "FDR" was taken aback for about a second and then replied, "How did I look?" I told him he had looked very rested!

Nicollo, I know that you will know much more about the history of the Potomac than I heard yesterday.

Congratulations to the Panthers. I hate playing the Bengals because everyone expects you to win easily and yet it's no automatic win. Sounded like it was interesting for a while.

The Titans played a good game and beat Indianapolis 27-17. Peyton Manning didn't get much done against us. Now we're back in the driver's seat in our division with a huge Monday Night game against the Pats.

The Falcons will have a difficult time sitting down for the flight home.

;^)

The Bears will see the same fate.
