Media dissapointed with Angels Victory
myself

Posted on 10/28/2002 7:26:43 AM PST by robjna

As I surfed back and forth during the World Series, (Hard to watch the 4+ hour marathons in total), I was struck by the Media's infatuation with Barry Bonds. He may be a very good player and he may have ben made better by whatever drug of choice. Fox was so fixated on him that it took away from not only a good team he was on , but a great team in Anaheim. Why does the media exhibit idiot savant behavior with sport individuals playing on a team concept? They usually pick bad boys, Bonds may not be that, but he will not get a Mother Theresa award. I have notice this on several occasions. The camera will always pan to the individual, even though he has nothing to do with the play, like his expression should make a difference. I notice this also last night with Steve Spurrier. A jerk of coach with a jerk of an attitude. Whether its Bonds, Moss, Rodman, or any other media glam-on , it doesa disservice to those other team mates who make up a team. No one probalby ever heard of one angle befor ethe play-offs and that is what makes it so sweet.

Dusty Baker's kid very nearly got squashed on a close play at the plate. The SF runner scooped him up and got him out of the way. Having those players' kids as batboys was at best a distraction and at worst dangerous.

Local Fort Worth Star Telegram headline reads: "Angels in Seventh Heaven". Thought that was a great headline.

Why thanks, glad you liked it!

I hate to bring race into it

So why do it? What the heck does the color of a player's skin have to do with how he plays ball?

If you whine this much when your team wins, I wouldn't want to be around you when they lose.

Whatever he's taking, the rest of MLB needs to get on, because he's leaving them in his dust.

At the plate, that's true. In the field, he looks like the dust is in his eyes.

Bonds is not just a good player; he's the best in baseball right now, and one of the best of all time. And this was his first World Series -- the rap on Bonds has been that he flopped in the postseason, but this year he finally did well in October. Of course it's newsworthy to see Bonds' reaction when the Giants lost the World Series. I was watching the game, and Fox only spent a few seconds camera time on Bonds as opposed to the Angels.

sports has become a soap opera

Look at the sillyness in country music; sports and other forms of entertainment seem to be following the WWF/Springer model to draw fan$. It's getting harder to tell when it's fake.

I agree with you to an extent but I guess I misspoke a little bit. I shouldn't have said "sports has become a soap opera" I should have said that "sports coverage has become a soap opera".

I sense that the pros involved go about their business in an adult way. It's the Bob Kosta's and Al Michael's and all the rest of this world that trivialize it and sentimentalize it. Versus the Springer/WWF in which the thing itself is at question not just the coverage. Here I blame the media and not the players/coaches/management.

Meanwhile, the Rangers are still in hell.

The New Jersey Devils are named after a biblical character. I don't know if anybody's boycotting them.

check the "topics choose" button on the "post article" form. There's a huge range of articles/opinions that are acceptable.

Since it's a current event, As American as the World Series, and it fits the "culture" topic that is allowable, then it makes sense to me for the moderators to allow it.

You probably need to have the extent of allowable topics changed at the FR level before you'd get anywhere with your argument.

I'm glad the Giants lost even though I'm a National League fan (Cincy Reds). I think Bonds is a constant abuser of steroids, I think his records mean nothing because of that, and more importantly, I think his abuse of those substances will take his life at an early age.

I don't want to support the ruination of legitimate records and the ruination of lives that are valuable in God's sight.

"The Media" is capable of only following one idea at a time. Thus in a dynamic situation, such as sports, "The Media" is poorly suited to follow the action of the unfolding play.

For example, near the end (9 th inning) of the last game (7 th), the question posed by the announcer was: If the Angels win, should Barry Bonds be named the MVP?

What a joke! Barry fumbled THREE balls hit to him in left field in game seven! His aim was off in game seven and he drove in NO runs. True, he did hit 4 home runs in the Series. "The Media" could see only that.

"The Media" did the same with Mia Hamm when the USA beat China. Mia had a so-so game, but many others played a lot better. Now what does "The Media" remember of that game? Right, the gal who took off her soccer jersey.

He also hit close to .500, and had an on-base percentage of over .700. If the Giants had won, of course he should have been MVP.
