I had SP1 installed and have no problems on 2 laptops (Dell & IBM) and one custome built machine. I would never buy a brand name pc. But im not a novice either.

Had several problems from it. Just today I finally figured out a problem I was having with some apps. Seems SP1 changes DLL loading order and I was getting a bad old DLL loaded. Guess DLL hell will never go away.

I have installed SP1 on two HP desktop machines (an old AMD 350MHz and a fairly new P4 1.8 GHz) and a Sony Vaio laptop. So far, no problems at all.

That's the breaks, sometimes.

I would never buy a brand name pc

HP had some code put in the newer HP computers ROM. They put part of the windows operating system in the ROM. That means you can't upgrade or fix those portions of windows. When you load fixes on windows that involve those sections of code the machine breaks and won't work.

The idea was that if you bought a windows XP machine and then in 2 years wanted to upgrade to the new Microsoft operating system you would have to buy a NEW HP COMPUTER to do so. That is real brains. I can upgrade my Dell but not my HP so I will buy a New HP is their logic. It is giant supidity.

A Client of mine bought 25 NEW HP computers. My software ran fine on these machines, but one application they use a lot, would not run on XP. It only runs on the 95/98/ME strain of windows.

They tried to load win 98 SE on the machines and they did what yours did. They locked up with a black screen. They had the orginal version of windows reinstalled on the machines and sold them for half price. For their needs the new HP machines were worthless. They were days old but since they had put another operating system on the HP machines HP said the warrenty was void.

They bought 25 generic machines for a lot less money and put Windows ME on them and everything ran just fine.

I would not buy an HP machine if it only cost half as much.

They tell me you can't fix bugs or security problems on a new HP machine if the problem is in Rom code or code that calls the ROM code. You can live with the bugs and no upgrades or buy a good machine for less money from some other vendor. Perhaps they will take the machine back and burn SP1 on the ROM for you. But that leaves you screwed for SP2 or SP3.

At the rate new viruses are being invented and security leaks discovered, you would have to be a couple fo french fries short to know this and still buy a New HP.

It is not BILL GATES FAULT. It is HP trying to build a machine you must replace rather than upgrade.

I don't think there is a away that HP can keep from going under as long as the current management is in place.
