Scientology may be viewed as a religion by the U.S. government (and it got that status under very questionable circumstances), but tax exempt status does not give it the right to walk all over other people's constitutional rights. The case of Tom Padgett is one instance of Scientology meddling with a judge and making his life hell just because he exercised free speech and spoke out about Scientology.
Further, there are numerous indications that Scientology controls the California State Bar. An attorney who has litigated against them was suspended, yet the State Bar refuses to investigate a Scientology attorney who broke many ethical rules, with hard evidence to prove it.
Society in general needs forums such as this to be "liberty trees." It's what will keep negative influences balanced.
