The ugly story of New Jersey Senator Robert Torricelli continues to grow. The Torricelli/Chang story has it all laundered campaign contributions, perjury, the destruction of documents, witness tampering, North Korea, illicit gifts, and a cast of characters reminiscent of the 1996 DNC fundraising scandal from which it emerged. The Senate Ethics Committee reprimanded Torricelli in July for accepting gifts from supporter David Chang after the Justice Department declined to prosecute. New evidence suggests that both the Justice Department and the Senate Ethics Committee may have neglected their responsibility. Media lawsuits have now uncovered a letter from the U.S. Attorney's...

Sen. Robert Torricelli, a prolific fund-raiser whose re-election hopes were severely damaged by an ethics controversy, told colleagues Monday he will drop out of the race if a suitable replacement on the Nov. 5 ballot is found, two Democrats said. The sources, who spoke only on condition of anonymity, said Torricelli informed New Jersey Democratic leaders and Senate colleagues of his plan. The sources cautioned Torricelli had not finalized his decision as discussions about a replacement continued. The senator planned an afternoon news conference in New Jersey. With the election just a little over a month away, Democratic officials were...

Sen. Bob Torricelli is dropping his bid for re-election to the United States Senate, PoliticsNJ.com has confirmed. He will make a formal announcement later today. Torricelli intends to serve the remainder of his term, which expires on January 4, 2003. The leading candidates to replace Torricelli on the Democratic ticket are former Sens. Bill Bradley and Frank Lautenberg, and Reps. Bob Menendez, Frank Pallone and Rob Andrews. One top Democrat close to the campaign says that Bradley has emerged as a very real candidate to run against Republican Douglas Forrester, and another Democratic leader says that Bradley is the top...

Monday, Sept. 30, 2002 Goodbye, Torricelli? Sen. Robert Torricelli is so corrupt even by the low standards set by New Jersey Democrats that it appears he's being forced out of his race for re-election. A source in the Democrat party told Fox News Channel today that Torch is considering dropping out. State and national party leaders "met with the freshman senator Sunday night to negotiate an end to his re-election campaign, a source close to Torricelli" told FNC. The cable network was abuzz this afternoon with speculation about which New Jersey Dem might replace the burned-out Torch.

Just got out of the shower after returning from DU -Saw an interesting comment about the Torricelli breaking news. The comment was to the effect "the Kingdom for a watch (and a few other things)", implying the DEMs will lose their kingdom (Senate) due to the Torch's gift of a watch.Let's kick some sand in their faces!!! I suggest we mail off to DEM Senate our old, broken watches - just to let them know they suck!

Torricelli May Resign, Drop Re-Election Bid Mon Sep 30,12:02 PM ET WASHINGTON (Reuters) - New Jersey Democratic Sen. Robert Torricelli, who has fallen behind in the polls after a barrage of corruption allegations, is considering dropping his bid for re-election and resigning his seat, a Democratic source said Monday. The source said Torricelli would make a decision "within the next few hours" on whether to resign from the Senate, where he was rebuked on allegations he accepted illegal gifts, so New Jersey's Democratic Gov. James McGreevey could appoint his replacement. Torricelli's Republican opponent Doug Forrester, has made an issue of...

TRENTON, N.J. -- State and national Democratic leaders were negotiating with U.S. Sen. Robert Torricelli to end his re-election campaign after months of news about illegal campaign donations and unethical behavior, sources said Monday. Torricelli is considering pulling out of the race, sources told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. Torricelli's public-approval ratings have taken a beating all year, and recent polls have showed him trailing Republican challenger Douglas Forrester, a startling predicament for any congressional incumbent. A Star-Ledger/Eagleton-Rutgers poll released this weekend showed Forrester leading by 13 percentage points. In June, the same poll had Torricelli leading by...

18. Exactly the point of this thread. It's already being discussed, and I don't really want to go through 18 threads (give or take one or two) to see everyone's comments.
