perhaps there is someone who is the main dude and Ricci could have cleared himself or rather diluted the main charges against him.

Yes, I agree this is true. I think Ricci probably buried Liz on Jun 8 but that doesn't mean he was the one that killed her. Only that he was involved in the kidnapping and had an interest in getting rid of the body. If the accomplice killed her there would be no one to question his accusation that Ricci did it. However I think the key to Dinses' phrase of 'clearing him' goes back to what he has said all along, that they need Ricci to answer these questions surrounding the Jeep on Jun 8, who he left Mohl's with, etc. so they can clear him, and now it won't happen. I don't think they ever truly thought he could clear himself but answering those questions to their satisfaction was what he would have had to have done to do it.

Primarily here I think he's sending a message to Angela that just because of Ricci's medical misfortune there will be no statement forthcoming from police clearing him.

neenah...this is the first that I heard that the vehicle was a blue van.... would have been helpful for the cops to release that description many many weeks ago...

I'd like to hear an explanation from police why this wasn't released. I bet one of Ricci's inner circle has a blue van.

I am offended by your use of the word "cracker" as an insult. In someone else, I would assume that they were merely ignorant. But I do not see how you, the linguist, could not know the honorable derivation of that term. You owe me and all of my honest, hard-working Georgia ancestors an explanation and an apology.

Bravo! Iwo Jima!

...
Handyman denies taking Jeep before girl abducted

Moul said Ricci then walked across the street with the garden tool and the bags slung over his shoulder to meet an unidentified man, who had waved to him from a convenience store parking lot.

Moul could not say if the two men drove away together, but he said he saw the second man talking on a pay phone outside the convenience store.
...

Since Ed is offering a new reward for information on the time surrounding the jeep's return, why doesn't Ed ask the police about the phone records for the calls made at the time Moul says the second man used the phone.

Not once have we heard what happen to the phone records. I would be a lot more inclined to believe Moul if I heard the phone records support his story.

The phone records have been completely ignored by the police.

The term I used was "crackers"; it has no singular; it's an adjective, not a noun. It's a gentle way of saying "crazy."

Suure... And I have a big bridge in Brooklyn I'll sell cheap to someone.

There wouldn't be a record of a local call on a pay phone would there be?

''Cracker'' is sometimes used with a negative racial overtone, but that's not its origin. It's the cow hunters, which is what we call them instead of cowboys. Of course, Georgia natives are called crackers, too. That may be a clue that the term wasn't restricted to cow hunters. My theory is that all those families creeping along dirt tracks through Georgia, Florida, Alabama in wagons pulled by oxen could crack the whip to keep 'em moving.

Thus, ''Crackers.''

This was how the term "Cracker" was derived. My ancestors also helped settle Georgia and Florida and to be a Cracker is honorable. Only cultural bigots think otherwise, Iwo Jima. Thank you for your comments -- this Cracker appreciates it.

I thought all phone calls were computerized now, especially from a pay phone. I thought I have seen the records obtained on one of the police shows on tv. Does anyone here know for sure?

jengaio's words: Do these people know they're doing that, though? Or are they really just muddle-headed, crackers, morons?

If she'd meant crackers as a noun there would not be a comma between "muddle-headed" and "crackers". She'd have written this: Or are they really just muddle-headed crackers, morons?

Main Entry: crack·ers
Pronunciation: 'kra-k&rz
Function: adjective
Etymology: probably cracked + -ers (as in starkers)
Date: 1928
: CRAZY

Nupe - I think $3k as opposed to $250k seems paltry.

I agree. Seems like a petty trick.

Also, it seems almost criminal to me that a man with a history of hypertension received no medication while in prison and has subsequently suffered a near fatal attack.

And don't flame about how "bad" Ricci is -- the fact is, he had not been charged in the Smart case or brought to trial. I thought Ed Smart showed an air of relief when Ricci became ill and now I'm more convinced he IS relieved for some reason unknown to the public -- thought I can make a couple of guesses.

I think Ed and Lois Smart sincerely are devastated by their daughter's disappearance, but also (he particularly) are anxious that the full story not be revealed.

OK, jo6pac, I'm willing to take your word for it. Actually, I rather doubt she is aware of any culture beyond the northeast.

"muddle-headed, crackers, morons?"

Me thinks we should start a little club for all of us muddle-heads, crackers, and morons....and what ever else we are called..

Only requirement is that you bring your sense of humor but no pre-concieved politically correct ideas...all ideas accepted for discussion...

Why else make the reward available if not to establish the connection?

They want to know who tried to break in for the safety of their neice.

The break-in also happened at the same time of night.

How did they know it was the same time of night, did it wake up the girl? I never heard that before.

What motivation would LE have for hiding anything from Ed Smart?

Like maybe it was someone who was supposed to be in jail and was accidentally released or some other situation embarassing and creating liability for police. Not saying it is, just that it's a possibility.

On one hand Ed says how much he trusts and appreciates them, then on the other he hints that they're not up to snuff on their actions and he starts his own 'investigation.' He defers to their demand to keep silent about every aspect of this case when he's asked direct questions. Do you think Ed's trying to bluff them into giving him more info? Do you think they have a connection that they don't want Ed to know about?

Ed's line he continually uses is 'this won't be solved without everyone's help'. I don't think he trusts the police implicitly but doesn't want to do anything that would make them quit working the case. He knows they're hiding things from him. Remember the woman that had the same lawyer as Ricci, and she alleged the lawyer told her to get rid of pictures she had of Ricci in a golf cap and building a fence on Jun 8 in Wyoming. Ed heard about that from someone and couldn't get information so I think he made up the story about the lost email with basically the same info to get her to come forward right away because he knew she wanted the reward money and with another witness out there that would force her to make her story known right away before the supposed person in the email got a prior claim. And it worked.

Just after this episode Ed brought Boylan into town. Ed went along with police initially agreeing not to bring her in, remember the remarks Klaas wanted him to go around LE (meaning bring her in when LE didn't want her). Then LE took credit for bringing Boylan in 4-5 days later and there was an article where SLCPD had half there detectives working the case and Ed said he was calling them every day. This marriage didn't last long, nothing has happened since.

Reason I think LE is suspect - I think they know who the accomplice is, he was seen by the milkman in daylight, on security video in convenience store shortly before kidnapping, from 20 feet by Fred Trujillo at Shriner's Hospital, by several searchers, and by Mohl across the street. Yet there was no sketch or photo released and police say they don't know who it is. How many scumbag friends does Ricci have? I don't believe they don't know. I don't know why they would want to keep it secret. The milkman said more than a week after the kidnapping he had never been interviewed by police and LE showed little interest in the video at Shriner's.

let's say, last month, you'd accuse us of being "whackjobs."

I've thought LE's story was suspect since the first week. I'm only bothered by people that take wild pleasure in whipping Ed Smart and refuse to accept Ricci is up to his comatose hairline in this.

This was a pretty frank admission they weren't giving him his medicatio and I'm waiting for an answer myself.
