I don't know when Utahn children start school, but Elizabeth should/would be starting the 9th grade, soon. :(

Richard Ricci, 48, was in critical condition, said Salt Lake County sheriff's Lt. Robby Russo. He was rushed to University Hospital after he complained of breathing problems and then passed out Tuesday night. Russo said Ricci suffered an aneurism or a stroke.

I'd like to know how this SLC sheriff Lt Robby Russo can make this diagnosis. It doesn't appear that he's a physician.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) After a four hour surgical procedure early Wednesday morning, the handyman who Elizabeth Smart's family believes is tied to her disappearance was in critical condition.

Richard Ricci continued to be on life support and was being monitored by hospital officials, said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Robby Russo. He was rushed to the hospital with breathing problems Tuesday night.

``They thought he might be brain dead before he went in,'' Russo said. ``Now, it's too early to tell if he will have brain damage if he survives.''

Russo said Ricci suffered either an aneurism or a stroke.

Ricci, 48, called guards Tuesday evening and told them he had trouble breathing, state Corrections spokesman Jack Ford said.

They found him sitting on his bed and while they were talking to him, he passed out. They began resuscitation and he was later flown to University Hospital in Salt Lake City, Ford said.

The cause of his illness was not known. Russo said hospital officials found no trace of drugs in his blood. ``It appears it was a medical condition.''

Ford said there was no note to indicate suicide found in his cell.

Ricci has not been charged in Elizabeth's disappearance, although the girl's father has repeatedly said he thinks Ricci was somehow involved.

The 14-year-old was kidnapped by an armed man on June 5 one of several high-profile child abductions this summer.

Ricci made a brief court appearance earlier Tuesday as his attorneys asked for more time to review theft charges against their client. Third District Judge Paul Maughan granted the request and a hearing was scheduled for Sept. 17.

Ricci allegedly stole $3,500 worth of items from the Smarts' home on June 6, 2001. A search of Ricci's home on June 19 turned up jewelry, a perfume bottle and a wine glass filled with seashells that belonged to the Smarts, according to court documents.

In addition, he is charged with one count of burglary and another count of theft for allegedly taking items from a home in the Smarts' wealthy neighborhood in April 2001. Jewelry and about $300 in cash were taken during the night burglary from a bedroom as a resident slept in the same room, according to the charges.

Ricci, who worked as a handyman in both homes, has pleaded innocent to the thefts and burglary.

Russo said Ricci's wife, Angela, was with him at the hospital.

Smart family spokesman Chris Thomas said, ``Our hearts go out to Angela and the family because we know they have been through so much.''

After the hearing, Angela Ricci reiterated her belief that her husband had nothing to do with Elizabeth's disappearance.

``I do know he's innocent. I still stand by him. I always have,'' she said.

At first, I was expecting a heart problem, but it evidently wasn't a heart attack. It sounds like Ricci had a healthy heart.

A brain aneursym wouldn't necessarily cause breathing problems, I wouldn't think. A heart attack would, but a brain aneurysm that doesn't cause death right away, wouldn't necessarily cause this type of problem.

My mother died of a brain aneurysm and she stayed in a coma for about a week and was breathing on her own.

The cause of his illness was not known. Russo said hospital officials found no trace of drugs in his blood.

Some drugs have to be specifically requested and will not be picked up on the usual drugs (toxicity) screens.

If this official account is basically true, I wonder if seeing Ed and Lois Smart in court precipitated a medical emergency, raising Ricci's blood pressure, for example, as a result of stress. If Ricci took Elizabeth in the course of a potential robbery, then got in deeper than he meant to and ended up killing her, his internal stresses would be enormous (as opposed to, say, those of a psychopathic or repeat sexual offender). Seeing the parents, people he knew who were kind to him, would be a tremendous strain. Just ruminating....

Your ruminations are valid, but equally valid is the possibility that the strain of being accused of a horrible crime on a child when you didn't commit the crime could cause a medical emergency.

"OK, I'll ask it...who silenced Ricci????"

Maybe the same person(s) who tried to silence Bret Edmunds. Ricci isn't the first major player in this little drama who has wound up hospitalized in a life threatening condition. As I recall, the focus of this investigation shifted to Ricci right after Edmunds talked.

I was also thinking that Angela Ricci may have a law suit against the police if Ricci really didn't do it. I know it would be hard to prove whether he did or didn't do it, but if the police knew Maul was lying and kept quiet about it, just so they would have a suspect in the case, I think she may have a case. For instance, we never heard what happen to the phone records across the street where Ricci supposedly made a phone call while Maul watched. If there wasn't any phone call made, Maul was caught in a lie that the police knew would lessen the possibility that Ricci took the car at the time of the crime.

I sure hope Angela sees a lawyer. If she puts a suit in, then we will find out more. If they have more on Ricci than they have made public, then Angela will be better off knowing the truth.

Wow! I shut down my computer early last night, and this is news to me! Having had a brain aneurysm myself, I have not heard of anyone passing out from one, short of going into a coma, or dropping dead. Headache is one sign of symtoms of an aneurysm, but so is high blood pressure. Have you heard any more about the 4 hour surgery that RR had? If it was an aneurysm, depending upon the area of the brain that it occurred of course, he could be fine.

I certainly hope that he pulls through.

If anyone slipped Ricci a drug(detectable or not) while he was in jail it might be that a person connected to law enforcement is involved.

Let's hope there are competent people on this and that we hear the true explanation of what happened, not what LE decides we need to hear.

Exactly, as I said before, how can the LE or sheriff or whatever, make any diagnosis. We're not interested in what their opinion or thoughts are as to what happened. Also, note IamHD's article, stating the Smart's think he's connected to the crime, not the authorities..hmmm..

I think that if anything was slipped to Ricci and/or Edmunds, the persons directly responsible would have been nothing more than hired hands.

"INSIDE EDITION on ABC doing child murder cases, Smith, Westerfield, Weaver, saying that suspects turn to tv to get communities behind them...interesting...haven't we discussed this at one time also.." hmmmmmmmm.......

All of these people were guilty of the crimes, weren't they. However, from reading some of the Westerfield case and various comments on FR, it's debatable whether he's truly guilty or has been setup. Has anyone heard anything further?
