Man Heads To Prison For Punching Police Dog
Incident Stemmed From Domestic Situation
POSTED: 5:45 p.m. EDT July 31, 2002
AKRON, Ohio -- An Ohio man was sentenced Wednesday for assaulting a police dog, stemming from a domestic situation in May.
Officials said that Robert Dulabhan's daughter called police when she learned her father had a gun.
Apparently, when officers came to arrest the man, the police dog bit Dulabhan on the head. The dog was ordered to release his hold, and that's when Dulabhan punched the dog in the nose.
On Wednesday, the soft-spoken Dulabhan, 57, learned not to hurt man's best friend, especially if it's the friend of a police officer.
Assaulting a police dog is a 4th-degree felony, and it carries a sentence of up to one year in prison.
That's exactly the sentence Dulabhan received Wednesday for slugging the police dog -- one year behind bars.
"The assault was toward a canine officer," Judge Mary Spicer said. "An officer is an officer, whether they have two legs or whether they have four legs."

"The assault was toward a canine officer," Judge Mary Spicer said. "An officer is an officer, whether they have two legs or whether they have four legs."This must be the most asinine statement I've heard in a fair piece.

If a human "officer" bites me, I'll do more than slug him.

This is just more crazy sh!t. A dog can cause more damage with a simple bite than a cop can whith one puch. And dogs, although trained, don't know how to use "the least amount of force possible". They bite until they are told to stop.
If you watch "Cops", you see them assault suspects with dogs all of the time. I remember seeing several where they send in the dog, the guy gives up, and two cops have him face down on the ground, and the dog keeps biting the mans legs. Usually, the suspect is yelling "Get the dog off me, get it off..." and a cop responds "Stop resisting..." and the dog just keep biting as the cop is yelling. What the hell would you do if two guys had you face down, and a dog was biting you? Lay still?
What a bunch of cowards.

You're saying if an animal had your head in its jaws you'd sit there and take it? Though, if ol' boy is stoopid enough to hit a POLICE dog

What I'm saying is, hitting the dog would probably make it madder, and sounds like the cop holding the leash wasn't making control his top priority at the time. What I personally would do is try not to give the dog ANY provocation to go even MORE apesh!t on my a$$. Hauling off and landing it one don't exactly sound like the Mensa thing to do. Them dogs can f**k you up, dude.

"The assault was toward a canine officer," Judge Mary Spicer said. "An officer is an officer, whether they have two legs or whether they have four legs." This judge is a moron. Assaulting a police dog is not the same thing as assaulting a police officer. A dog does not have the same ability to reason or restrain himself the way on police officer can. If a dog comes after me, I am going to treat him like a dog, whether he is owned by the police or not.
A police dog is not a police officer. Any statement that they are is just sentimental hogwash. They are a tool of the police, like a gun or a car. Nothing more.
PS. I am a pet owner and I love dogs. I just don't think they should have the same rights as people. As soon as people no longer have ownership rights over animals, you can toss the notion of having a pet, as you know it, out the window.

Another robed moron.I disagree. I think that she did this out of malice toward the peasants rather than ignorance or stupidity. I would rather say another robed tyrant.
Hmmm, what was it Patrick Henry said anyway?

Excuse me, didn't the article say he had a gun? If he intended to hurt the dog, he could have SHOT him. Why do some people make excuses for police abuses?
Whether you believe it or not, police are not your friends.
Don't believe it? Let someone make a charge against you and you'll be in "'cuffs". That's their job. If a superior says to go out and arrest someone, they Have to assume the superior is correct in issuing that order and, like robots, they must follow those orders. You would then have to prove your innocence, therefore, "innocent until proven guilty" is a joke and, in reality, is only a legal term to be used in a court of law.
FYI, I am a law abiding citizen of the first order, however, I see a trend developing in this country that is scary and that is that 60% of you are willing to trade your liberty for so--called security.
Oops, my tin foil hat sliiped again.

I'm using 'moron' as a term of derision.

If he intended to hurt the dog, he could have SHOT him. BS. He punched the dog intending to hurt him. I am sure even this idiot had enough sense realizing that if he shot the dog, he could of been shot himself or been arrested.Whether you believe it or not, police are not your friends.
I think the cops are my friends. I like cops. I have a friend who's a cop...I look up to (most) of them.

Actually EVERY animal organization is about SOME people controlling how ALL people may treat their animal property.

That could be said about everything.
