Erosion theme this week. Story behind this is a phone call last week from a friend who asked about "geologically"- themed trips that a group could take. My first thought was Dinosaur National Monument in Utah. I described the gooseneck narrows of that occurred when uplift allowed canyon cutting in previously formed meanders on the Green and Yampa Rivers. Turns out that the best example of this is in Canyonland NP and not in Dinosaur NM. Oh well. I couldn't find a good picture on the Web, so I'm substituting this one instead. The Web site also has nice shots of Arches and Bryce Canyon: both places I'd like to visit but haven't had the chance yet.
In the category of recent images, USGS has more lava flow shots at the Kilauea Eruption Update page (and suggestions on proper lava- watching attire.
NASA Earth Observatory recent images are primarily of human- related alteration of the Earth's surface on the Iraqi border and the Salton Sea in California.

Geologically themed as only in interest or rockhounding? Both, actually. I'm not familiar with good rockhounding sites in the West (and only a few in the East); my friend lives in Texas so Southwest trips are favored. I pointed out that it's NOT a good idea to collect samples inside national parks or monuments (being illegal except under special permits, of course).
