NEW! Add keywords to existing articles!
Posted on 06/16/2002 7:20:43 PM PDT by John Robinson
You now have the ability to add keywords to existing articles. In the KEYWORD column, click "Add Keyword" to access the form. You must be logged in to use this function. For security and cleanup duty, keywords added via "Add Keyword" are logged with your user id, though currently only moderators can view this information (though that may change in the future.)
Use this feature as an ad hoc topic system and replacement for the deprecated bump list register.
TOPICS: Focus Software
KEYWORDS: adhoctopics; bumplist; bumplists; forumsoftware; keywords; newfeature; threads

Remember the olden days of Whitewater and the four-thousand topic mess? Hopefully we won't ever come to that. :-)

Ad hoc topic/bump list bump.

Great news, I think. There was one thing about the Bump Register. We could scan down thru the list and find the most likely place to tag threads. Unless a group have a common keyword, think of the various spellings of Al Queda , Al QUIDA --- etc. we will miss articles in an area we are wanting to monitor closely.
I guess if we had a common communication device where people could propose keywords and an explanation of what articles they think the keyword would cover we might be able to avoid the 4000 keyword mess.

Thanks for the ping, it looks like you have pinged most of the crew. It looks like this thread will be worth monitoring over the next few days to see what ideas everybody has.

Do you have any thoughts on what I said above?
That was kind of a reponse to what you had asked me in your Freepermail note.

The new topic system will take care of this; the keywords are only a band-aid for the band-aid. Though at a later time, I'd love to implement keyword synonyms... that would translate a number of spellings into one keyword.
To: John Robinson
(I realize that wasn't clearly expressed in the article body. Where is article edit when you need it.)

Thanks John for your reply and your efforts in putting together such a fantastic system!
Know anything about DB2 - Personal Developer Edition?

Always appreciate your efforts, however large or small. Thanks.

Thanks for the ping, for now I will use the bump list names but without "list" or underscores between words. Watch what keywords are getting lots of use and use them, also when a new hot topic comes up we can link all of the articles easily.

I'm confused. What will happen to the posts currently listed under each Bump List topic? Say, if I post something today, and use "Global Warming Hoax" as a keyword, will my post be added to list we have been keeping for this keyword, or are we starting at zero here and chucking the previously listed posts?
(Putting "keyword" in the "To" box to test. Could NOT post using "keyword" in the TO: box.)

testing, using "keywords". Still can't reply, So FreeTUSA, I guess this means no use of keywords or topics in the TO box in any format.

I assume we have the ability to do things the old way as well as the new way for awhile.
To: madfly
We can use both for a while but the bump lists have a limit of 250 posts, depending on you preference settings. The keywords provide a direct link to other articles that use the same keyword just by a click on the keyword. With keywords you get a list that includes the lead in 100 words to the article. Check keywords at the top of the page.
