In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of word for the day. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the word of the day; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-) Practice makes perfect.....post on....
prolix \proh-LIKS; PROH-liks\, adjective:
prolixity; noun
prolixly; adverb
1. Extending to a great length; unnecessarily long; minute in narration or argument; excessively particular in detail;-- usually used with reference to discourse written or spoken; as, a prolix oration; a prolix poem; a prolix sermon.
2. Indulging in protracted discourse; tedious; wearisome; -- applied to a speaker or writer.
Conscious dullness has little right to be prolix.
--Samuel Johnson, Idler No. 1, 1758
Usage: Prolix; Diffuse
A prolix writer delights in circumlocution, extended detail, and trifling particulars. A diffuse writer is fond of amplifying, and abounds in epithets, figures, and illustrations. Diffuseness often arises from an exuberance of imagination; prolixity is generally connected with a want of it.
Etymology: Middle English, from Middle French & Latin; Middle French prolixe, from Latin prolixus extended, from vpro- forward + liquEre to be fluid. Date: 15th century

TOPICS: Education; Humor; Miscellaneous; Word For The Day

Good Morning Class. Welcome to School!
Here is my example with WFTD.
"''There is going to be a lot of public concern about how you treat a United States citizen,'' said Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., a former prosecutor and a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee. ``I think that guy's got to be kept in detention, but I think the definition is a congressional matter.''
Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., added that ``the attorney general has to come up with a rationale for why they're doing this. They've got to make their case.''
Geez Louize, I loathe McCain. Specter is no better. These men for some unknown reason actually love the sound of their own voices and believe that they are important to the United States. What they dont realize is that no one cares, and their endless prolixity does nothing but make themselves look bad. In their unceasing desire to give America away to any Tom, Dick or Harry, all theyve done is shown the world is that they would sell our security for a little publicity. The Recall McCain effort needs to go back into full force, and as for Specter, perhaps someone can explain to him what we are at war, and this turkey is a military combatant and what exactly that means. /disgusted voice

A prolix writer delights in circumlocution, extended detail, and trifling particulars. Perfectly describes the anti-smokers I dealt with last night!!!

Actually, I was in the limo finishing a martini and recording the strange sounds coming from the janotir closet. I thought there were wild animals trapped in there....
