Yeah, something like that. It would have been a nice little nest egg for The Guild.

Did you see that War Emblem hurt himself and went in the ambulance? What exactly happened?
To: texasbluebell
Oh my. He IS a fine looking fella! Grew up on a ranch near Nogales, and got into racing via Quarter horses, then graduated to thorougbreds.
Bad karma for the sheik - you cannot bomb a state, and then expect to come back in a win millions of dollars. You just can't.

Proud Citizen - swelling on the R. front "ankle" - distal end of the canon bone (metacarpal 3) at the fetlock joint - where the canon joins the "pastern" (first phalanx). There are two small sesmoids that sit in the back of this joint and could be he fractured one. It's a pretty typical injury and usually repaired surgically - while it could end his racing career, it isn't life threatening. Remember, that's assuming a lot - we only know that he's got a slight swelling there and an uneven gate.

Charlsey Canty just said they lost Harlan's Holiday earlier in the week - anybody hear what happened to him? Was it a colic?

Is this what they were talking about to today's winning owner? Or maybe not, as it was something earlier in the week, about Harlan's Holiday, I thought that was the horse they were mentioning. Searched but couldn't find anything else about a mishap for that horse. Sad story about this horse Pleasant County though, in an earlier race at Belmont today. What a shame to lose a beautiful horse like this.

Horse racing-Horse dies in Belmont Park spill
BELMONT, N.Y., June 8 (Reuters) - A bad accident in a minor race in the Belmont Park card leading up to War Emblem's attempt on the Triple Crown killed one horse, badly injured another and shocked a big Belmont Park crowd on Saturday.
Imadeed was challenging for the lead in the fourth race, a contest for fillies and mares, with Pleasant County running just behind when Imadeed stumbled and fell, sending Pleasant County crashing to the ground in full view of a packed grandstand.
Pleasant County died on the track of a fractured skull, while Imadeed was taken from the track with a fractured right leg. Neither jockey was seriously hurt. Imadeed pilot John Velazquez was riding in his first race since a spill on Friday. < snip >

The fallen horse story is too sad....I can't read things like that.
Anyone interested in this year's US Open at Bethpage, NY--Black Course (Awesome!), there's a special on the Golf Channel right now (7:00 Central). This is the course Rush has been ga-ga-ing about ever since he played it.

Too sad, yes. I was just wondering if this was the incident with today's winning owner, though. Have you heard if he lost a horse this week? Someone was talking about that at the end of the broadcast today.

Harlan's Holiday is alive and well. When they said McPeek (the trainer of the horse that won today) "lost" him, they meant that he was fired by the owners. So the horse was moved to another barn, or trainer. This was devastating to mcPeek as he had trained that horse from the get go. So it was sweet revenge that his other horse in the race won. The owners of Harlan's Holiday were very upset that the horse did not race well in the Derby or Preakness so they blamed the trainer. Since the horse is only two years old, he has many years of racing left. He probably did not race today because of the trainer change.
Poor War Emblem, even though he tripped out of the gate he still gave it a shot. But that start was just too much to overcome. Lucky for him, he could have been hurt or thrown his jockey. His stud fees will still be astronomical.

The very least that Hillary should do for Chelsea is to buy her the book that George McGovern wrote about his daughter. She was an alcoholic and died at a very young age because of it. Since McGovern is a liberal, maybe his words would mean something. I have not read the book but when he wrote it a couple of years ago he was on all the talk shows promoting it and the libs were falling all over him.

Hey DS, good to hear Harlan is alive and well. I didn't hear about Pleasant County until reading the post. Racing is a very dangerous sport for both horse and rider. It would be a lot less dangerous for the horse if they'd start them a little older so that their bones are ready for the pounding. But, no getting around a fall - that is just part of the risk. I once worked on a horse who's racing career was over. He had a very arthritic "knee." The owner, still wanting to race him, tried to get me to block out the knee so that he wouldn't feel pain while running the race. While this is illegal, it also would have jeapordized both horse and jockey. I kinda looked at the guy like he was half stupid and walked away. Now this was no great shakes of a horse, and a nameless race. But imagine the pressure put on track veterinarians every day. That was not a life for me.
