CHARLES CITY, Iowa (AP) - A duck in need of a nesting spot improvised a little and made a home in the bedding plants at a Kmart garden center.

"It's been kind of fun," Adams said. "It's just been a little novelty thing. The kids seem to enjoy her."
Kmart employees put up a "duck with egg" caution sign to give the duck privacy. She's ensconced in a six-pack of gold, long-stemmed flowers.
Adams said the flowers probably won't be sold once Mama and her ducklings move out.
"She's made her bed in them and that's about all we're going to be able to do with them, I think," she said.
How about the three bears next!

"I'm gonna let ya' in on a little secret, Ray. K-Mart ducks."
Many years ago, my boys and I went over to the local mall...we parked right next to a big light pole.....the light pole had a place, where there was a metal plate, that could be unscrewed, I guess to check the inside of the pole...well, that metal plate was missing....
And we notice a bird flying in and out of that hole in the pole...we looked inside and sure enough, that bird was building its nest inside the pole...
So once a week, whether we need to shop or not, we went back to the mall, to check on the bird and its nest...over the course of a few weeks, the bird completed its nest, laid its eggs, hatched the babies, the babies grew, and eventually flew away...
I guess birds will build their nests wherever they feel it is convenient for them..
Once upon a time, there was a Poppa Bear who was supposed to tuck little baby bear in bed, but the big bad wolf came in and took baby bear from her bed whilst Poppa Bear was bedding down someone else other than Momma Bear, who was entertaining other bears, eating porridge and drinking milk and cookies...
The huge, big bad wolf snuck in the house and grabbed little baby bear while everyone was not looking.
Poor baby bear
Tears brim as father of slain girl testifies

SAN DIEGO (Court TV ) ? The father of slain second-grader Danielle van Dam took the stand against her alleged killer Wednesday morning and began recounting the night his daughter vanished from her bedroom.

"She was in her bed right here with her dollies," the software engineer told the panel of the last time he saw his daughter. An alternate juror clutched her notebook to her chest and wiped at her eyes.
David Westerfield, a 50-year-old engineer who lived two doors from the van Dams, faces the death penalty for the kidnapping and murder of Danielle. She was snatched from her bedroom Feb. 2. Her nude, decomposed body was found along a roadside three weeks later.
Prosecutors allege Westerfield was a pedophile who crept into the van Dam's home in the dark, snatched her and then raped and suffocated her. Westerfield's lawyers have cast blame on the parents who, they say, are "swingers" ? adults who swap sex partners ? and brought unsavory people around children.
Defense lawyer Steven Feldman is expected to grill Damon van Dam about his sex habits and drug use Wednesday afternoon. Van Dam acknowledged under questioning from prosecutor that he and his wife smoked a marijuana joint in the family garage the night of the abduction.
"Why did you do that?" asked Dusek.
"Because they had it out there," said van Dam of his wife and two female friends.
He said he initially lied to investigators.
"I didn't think it mattered and I didn't want to get in trouble," he said.
He also admitted he kissed and "snuggled" one of those friends in his bed that night. He initially concealed that from police, too.
"It didn't seem to matter that (she) came upstairs," said van Dam. Acknowledging the rumors about the couple's sex life, he said, "it still doesn't seem to matter."
Van Dam gave a detailed account of the Friday night. His wife, Brenda, went to a bar while he stayed home with his two sons and daughter. He described a mundane suburban evening: take-out pizza and beer for dinner and then video games with his sons.
He said he put his children in bed at about 10 p.m. and then turned in himself. He woke to let the dog out and again when his wife and her friends came home about 2 a.m. He said he and Brenda went to bed a half hour later, shutting the dog in their eldest sons room. They did not, however, check on the children.
Sometime in the three o'clock hour, he said, something woke him up and he noticed an alarm panel indicated an open door or window somewhere in the house. When he went to investigate, he found the rear sliding door open. He concluded one of his wife's friends had opened the door, a conclusion he said he made "quickly and mistakenly."
He also gave jurors the layout of the house and seemed to poke a hole in at least one defense theory ? that Westerfield, who barely knew the family, would never have been able to navigate a strange house and find Danielle's room.
Damon van Dam showed jurors photos of the doors to the children's three rooms. Derek, 10, had a Pokemon sticker on his door while Dylen, 5, had a Tarzan photo on his. Danielle's door was decorated with a heart and two flowers, and immediately upon opening the door, her canopy bed was visible.
Judge William Mudd warned witnesses and those attending the trial against wearing mementos of Danielle, including button pins showing her picture. Damon van Dam took his off to testify, stuffing it in the front pocket of his white dress shirt. His daughter's image was visible through the fabric.
Westerfield's case has moved remarkable quickly to trial. Danielle disappeared four months ago and Van Dam still spoke of his daughter in the present tense.
"She's just learning to spell," he said. Later he described Danielle reading to her Dylen, saying, "She likes to help him learn to read."
Also testifying Wednesday was forensic dentist Norman Sperber, who the prosecution called to bolster their theory that Danielle was suffocated. Sperber said Danielle was missing four front upper teeth, including one later found in the back of her mouth.
Sperber said teeth could have been knocked out during an assault, but might also have fallen out as the body decayed. If that was the case, Sperber said, the teeth should have been located at the spot where she was dumped. The teeth were not.
Damon used Danielle's name in the "present"...not "past". It was a pathetic attempt to gain the jury's sympathy.. that he hasn't dealt with the reality of her death yet...poor Demon.

The little snippet I saw of Damon so far today showed a slouching, hostile guy. I think Feldman or someone on the defense might have been questioning him. Did the pros. do a redirect to try to clean it up?
Didn't see the whole thing, CTV cut off..but I think Feldman is going to recall Damon at some point.
So far, not a shred of evidence against Westerfield, only opening statements by Dusek implying the evidence will come...yawn.
Strange, if DW weren't on the DEFENSE, we honestly would be looking at someone who was at the home that evening to have murdered Danielle.
The scales aren't balanced, are they?
sw
So, we are to believe that DW who wasn't in the house KNEW his way around, but those who knew their way around and WERE in the house, didn't harm the child?
OK...I'm all ears.
