this 'new' format is not nerd friendly at all. looking at the pages's source and this => <== lead me to wonder whether 'new' means a paint job and a grab bag of microsoft extensions... sigh...

I agree with you about the width of the borders cutting into the copy width. Also, the titles seem a little large on the page listing all the recent posts. But, maybe a little "survival of the fittest" wouldn't hurt...we'll have to accept change or find something else to fill time...
