The Kirby translation's fun. I read that last spring. It's an older translation so check the library; retains the traditional, rather than phonetic, spellings, and has that rythme to it... Kalevala has the same beat as Longfellow's Hiawatha, which is actually very similar, except with indians rather than Finnish gods and heroes. I like Kalevala better...

The movie The Day the Earth Froze was a Scandinavian production based on some of the legends from the Kalevalala. It was neat to watch, because although it was filmed in Scandinavia the terrain looks just like where I grew up in Upper Michigan.

The movie is one of the better episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000 (in my opinion.)
