This cure is worse than the disease the whiners complain about: "Having to see posts that are dumb." They don't have to click on them and read them, it just cheeses them off to see that they exist in the first place. And now, to placate the whiners, I'm going to have to have open and refreshed umpteen windows if I like to observe more than one forum.

To continue the discussion from the Yahoo forum...I disagree. It isn't that I think vanity posts are beneath me, I just like defaulting to only news/serious commentary. When I have extra time on my hands, I'll go searching for some lighter threads. But generally, what has made FR most worthwhile to me is the idea of one-stop shopping for all the latest news. The sheer volume of vanity replies makes that extremely difficult as of late.

Just thought I'd provide the opposing view. Regards.

I see an unhealthy trend where whiners will be appeased,

Reflective of society in general, I'm afraid. . . .

We had that at one time, but it was insufficient to stop the complaining.

You used to be able to filter certain topics, like vanities, so that they would not show up at all. However, that would require someone to actually set it up, and that's much to technical for some folks. Their solution is to just isolate the "stupid" posts somewhere that they don't ever have to even see.

This will amount to dumbing down the whole forum as we try to appeal to the whiners among us. This WILL endanger funds, as I've already had some folks FReepmail me about their "buyer's remorse" from having donated money last week.

It is sad to contemplate the need to wave a fond farewell to the FR that I used to love as it collapses to catering to a bunch of FReeploading complainers.

I wonder if a link will be prominantly posted to tell us where to go to stop our monthly payments?

Well, that's just dandy for you. Meanwhile, we all have to be inconvenieinced for the people who are unable to search or simply IGNORE silly threads. Personally, I would like a separate category for Bush-bashers, so that I don't have to look at those threads!! I would never seriously request that, but that is similar to what is happening here.

I am ticked off because America the Right Way, which used to be USA vs. Clinton, and is the LONGEST RUNNING DAILY THREAD ON THIS FORUM, has been relegated to the same category as Britney Spears latest flapdoodle, all because of WHINERS!!

ATRW provides links to stories from overnight postings, links to the top stories in the Washington Times, weather bulletins, recipes, gardening tips, financial market information, alerts for breaking news on television, commentary on speeches and news conferences, and other interesting information.

It is NOT a vanity post, and I am getting more and more steamed about this.

I remember that. When the option was available I chose to see all posts, but recently I think the volume of vanity posts has become much heavier.

Their solution is to just isolate the "stupid" posts somewhere that they don't ever have to even see.

I can understand your point. Perhaps there is greater utility in using different forums for those who want to gravitate along ideological lines. IOW, a "Christian conservative" forum, "libertarian" forum, and so on. That might reduce the flame wars.

Hopefully everyone will give it some time to settle out. I'm sure John Robinson will be receptive to user feedback and make changes accordingly.

Well, apparently the PTB don't consider me and thee to be the squeaky wheels around here. We both know where more than your average squeaking is coming from.

"I'm sure John Robinson will be receptive to user feedback and make changes accordingly."

It is already apparent to me that some feedbacks are more equal than others.

Meanwhile, we all have to be inconvenienced for the people who are unable to search or simply IGNORE silly threads.

My only point is that the vanity posts often receive such heavy volume that it's difficult to find much else on the forum page. I suppose one could make a case for the free market dictating what conversation is seen here, but I've always been under the impression news and activism are the main focus here. Those are the topics that interest me.

My point is, I'm not trying to say certain posts are inferior to others; only that adding a sort function to the forum seens like a good idea to me. Perhaps I'm in the minority on that. Regards.

I appreciate your point. I also respectfully disagree about what is happening. Whether or not it is intended, separating the forum has created "Superior" and "inferior" classifications of posts, and will be the death of the place.

My point: The financial base of FR will be destroyed if the forums completely split up, as people find cross-forum searches impossible. Besides, why support a forum that thinks your posts are "stupid?"

OK, here is an example. Suppose that Britney Spears decides to support President Bush? Where does that go...General or News? What about commentary on Alan Keyes's show? Is that news or general? What about comments about Letterman's show when Cheney is on?

Everyone is going to have to go through all sorts of decision-making and rigamarole because of the people who complain.

And another thing, those people who abuse this forum with their rants about some aspect of Bush's policies will STILL post their stuff under news, because they think their opinions are more important.

I AM IN A BAD MOOD!

Is there any way to add both forums to Self-Search?

Make sure it can be filtered though. I don't want Texaggie's stupid pings on my self search page.

It would be great if we could "clear" our invidual Self Search lists.

Oh heck, looks like I better go BACK to the barn and sit with the horses. Suddenly FreeRepublic has gotten soooo confusing. And THIS thread, can ya tell me WHAT language they are speaking???

Hopefully there will be a thread explaining all the new 'stuff', so that dummies like me can still follow along. (sigh) Maybe JR will publish a book called 'FR For Dummies'. LOL!!!

I AM IN A BAD MOOD!

*grin* I gathered that...

Ya know, this forum is still a pretty darn good resource, even if one of us ends up with a version that's different than what we'd prefer. I guess I can wade through the vanities if you can put up with Britney Spears and Bush-bashing getting the same prominence as daily threads. (At least until FR gets through its growing pains.) It would be a shame to deprive everyone of our sheer brilliance. ;-)

Well, you see, this is what has me irritated. If I could wave a magic wand there are threads which I would prefer disappear. Do I complain and whine and ask to have them SEGREGATED? No. I just IGNORE them.

Some days, when I want news, I have to ignore posts on drugs (always so edifying), posts about how Bush has sold out, caved, is a socialist, etc.

To my mind, these are just as bad, if not worse than the cheese threads. They are long-running arguments filled with vitriol. I choose to ignore them.

So why should I give money to be segregated away from news (speaking of ATRW here) and yet these people will put their commentary in the news forum? (And you KNOW they will.)

"So why should I give money to be segregated...

Bingo. That's why this will hurt the forum in more ways than just cheesing folks off.
