Alphabet is Google’s self-created parent company. On October 29, its stock dropped $500 billion — in a day. Thirteen percent of Alphabet’s total value.
....
Alphabet is hemorrhaging AI cash — just like all the other Big Tech companies making the AI Big Bet. I still think the AI Big Bet is a big bubble that is about to burst.
....
problem is Web Search. I have screwed around with AI a little in a variety of areas. The one thing for which I still return to the AI well? Web Search. Sorry, Google. I use Grok (sorry, Google). I like its results and summary voicing a little better than the others I’ve tried — including Google’s.
Google’s original product was Web Search. Over the decades, it successfully abused Big Government cronyism — so as to abuse and corruptly dominate the planet’s marketplaces. The result? Over 90% of the planet’s October 2026 Web searches — were Google searches.
....
Search was still Alphabet’s majority revenue source. Until Q3 2026, that is. When it dropped to 49.7%. In Q1 2020? It was 59.5% of revenue.
The Age of AI has not been good for Google Search. Part of the Search revenue percentage drop — is the countervailing growth of Cloud. But part of it is AI Web Search — increasingly replacing Google Web Search.
...
More than a little of Google’s injury has been self-inflicted.
In the Age of AI, when you execute a google.com Web search? At the tippy-top of their results page — is their AI summary of your results.
Which means Google is undercutting its advertisers. Who pay lots of money to get eyeballs on their ads — and to get to the top of the Search results list:

All of mine are in the 10%. This is telling…
Google is an monopolistic advertising company run by Indians who replaced Americans.
I rarely utilize any Google search, and the only way I do so is through Startpage.com, which gives me privacy.
I don’t go to Google properties, including Gmail.
Google is for suckers, which appears to be 90% of the world.
That’s okay, because I’m in the 19% of people who haven’t gotten a COVID vaccine. In fact, I haven’t had COVID, despite being tested twice for a cold or something.
I do my best to avoid google products.
I was reading the threads about how if you asked Google AI (or any of the main ones, except Grok) if it was OK to ask for a black or Indian or Muslim (or whatever doctor and how it would praise your braveness and chide you if you asked if it was OK to ask for a white doctor (racist!).
So I asked it if it was “OK to not date white guys”. (yes)
“Is it OK to not date black guys” (no, you racist)
It’s almost funny.
Startpage still has heavy google-like censorship/hiding of links the powers that should not be do not like.
Yandex is a breath of fresh air—give it a try and see what you think.
“ Yandex is a breath of fresh air”
Ah, yes, the Russian search engine pushing Russian propaganda. It just a different kind of bad. Owned by Putin cronies.
If I could think of anyone I trust less than Google, it would be Yandex.
I use duck duck go but it’s search assistant and AI is beyond bad. I correct the AI constantly and it constantly apologizes and corrects it’s mistake..until you ask the same question again and get the same bad answer.
Stop the “Russia, Russia, Russia” nonsense.
There are an incredible number of links totally impossible to find on Google that you can get using Yandex.
It is not my fault that Americans are censoring Americans.
Sure, comrade.
If you didn’t otherwise constantly promote Putin’s talking points, you’d have credibility.
For actual Americans, brave.com search engine — unedited, and not reporting your searches to either creepy perverts in Palo Alto or Moscow— is the choice.
I will try Brave and see how it does...
“Alphabet, which showed that growth in Google’s search-advertising business slowed—in part because of the impact of “AI mode” queries.”
i’ve been predicting this very thing here for months.
and it’s only going to get worse ...
the problem for the search/ad biz is that it has become a total waste of time to search the old fashioned way when one can just ask specific questions of google AI [or any other of the plethora of AIs] all day long and quickly get exact answers ...
thus one never sees any ads at all because one is no longer looking at Internet content, just asking google AI et. al. questions and letting it do all the heavy lifting behind the scene, a scene in which ads make zero impression on google AI or those who ask it questions ...
the other negative side of this AI-search coin is that if no one is searching the old fashioned way, they are also no longer exposed to crowd-sourcing types of websites and discussions, and thus no longer feel the urge to contribute their knowledge, experience and expertise ... the result is going to be that no new crowd-sourced information will enter the Internet, and the old crowd-sourced information will soon go stale, thus quickly diminishing the value of the entire Internet as a whole ....
basically, google AI is eating its own lunch in multiple ways ... couldn’t have happened to a nicer monopoly ...
Thank you for the Yandex recommendation. It’s a breath of fresh air. :)
Search actually grew, but at a slowing rate, which has raised concerns with investors. I think Alphabet is more likely to adapt than to be overtaken, because its cloud, AI models, and investments give it several ways to benefit from AI. But search could still shrink in importance, leaving Alphabet with a lower-margin or less dominant business, so surviving AI wouldn’t necessarily mean preserving its old economics. The main things to watch are ad clicks, whether advertisers pull back, and how quickly consumer AI revenue grows.
