Though they're quick to call anybody who dares question them racist, fascist, nazi, Hitler, Leftists show that they're the real authoritarians. This is the case in one Western country after another.
You can cancel an election and ban the winner from running (Romania), you can ban your opponents from ever running again (Hungary), you can threaten to ban the main opposition party and subject it to relentless investigations by the secret police (Germany), you can threaten a ban on the leading presidential candidate and make them wear an ankle monitor (France), every member of your circle can be investigated for corruption (Spain), you can try and cancel local elections because you will lose them (Britain), and you can storm the constitutional court with riot police because you want to control it (Poland).
You can just do all these things. The secret is you just have to be on the right side of the European Commission.

Note that they do not claim to be upholding democracy, just "democratic" values.
What they mean is a set of moral principles that operate like Kant's Categorical Imperative. Massive regulation and taxation with redistributive social programs and worker rights are a "democratic value." So is open borders for the less fortunate claiming "asylum," even if it's for economic reasons.
Actual democracy, meaning what the peoples of Europe would vote for is simply the "will of all" based on self-interest, not the "general will" based on rational, universal morality.
Imposing a universal morality requires a bureaucracy and judiciary that are above electoral control, which is what the EU is and what individual EU governments are when they indict or restrict political opposition to maintain the "universal" globalist consensus.
