Voters in Oil-Rich Alberta Reject Leaving Canada
New York Times ^ | 10/20/2026 | Ian Austin

Residents of Alberta voted on Monday to remain part of Canada, rejecting a campaign to try to separate the oil-rich western province from the rest of the country.

Voters in a referendum endorsed remaining in Canada over the option of holding a second vote on whether to secede.

With just over a third of votes counted, 76 percent of voters chose to remain part of Canada with 23 percent seeking another vote.

Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed the result.

“Albertans chose Canada,” he said in a statement. “All Canadians will move forward together with renewed purpose and high ambition.”

In a speech to supporters in Edmonton, the provincial capital, Thomas Lukaszuk, a former provincial lawmaker whose Forever Canadian organization led the campaign to oppose secession, addressed President Trump. The vote, he said, “will send a very strong message to the rest of the world: Don’t mess with Canada.”

Unlike in Quebec, a province that held two unsuccessful votes on leaving Canada, secessionist sentiments have always been a minority viewpoint in Alberta. Still, opponents of separatism worried before the vote that voters might support holding a second referendum to show their unhappiness with the province’s relationship with Canada, even if they did not want to secede.

The vote was the work of Danielle Smith, the conservative premier of Alberta, who managed to provoke the ire of people on both sides.

Ms. Smith assumed the leadership of the United Conservative Party largely through the support of separatists who were responsible for ousting the previous premier, Jason Kenney, from party leadership.

Supporters of leaving Canada were dismayed, questioning why Ms. Smith had asked residents to vote on whether to hold a second vote on secession — and not the more direct question of whether they wanted to stay in Canada or leave.

Deceptive question allows defectives headlines overstating the issue.

No surprises here in that the globalists will be globalist and manipulate the will of the electorate.

Nationalism is a strong sentiment even when the population of a part of a country is unhappy with the central government. Albertans obviously strongly identify with Canada, and one defining characteristic of Canada is that it is not the United States. American attempts to take Canada failed in our War for Independence and the War of 1812. Many English Canadians are the descendants of American Loyalists who fled the United States after 1783. The pro-Crown sentiment was reinforced by waves of settlers from England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland in the 19th and 20th Centuries. German, Italian, and Slavic immigrants to Ontario and the Prairie Provinces did not initially have that loyalty, but as they assimilated, they absorbed Canadian attitudes.

“Canada, and one defining characteristic of Canada is that it is not the United States.”

A Canadian retired couple rented the apartment near mine from about 1982-1984. Canada was perfect. Canada was everything wonderful. Everything in America was, if not shit certainly not great. I never asked why they were living in Florida if Canada was so great. I just assumed weather, since this was in St. Pete. Frankly, I didn’t care. But since then, everything I’ve learned about Canadians seems to support the anti-American prejudice even though they chose to actually live in this Hell hole.

I think they need to feel superior. Which tells me they feel inferior.

Those Indians and Pakistanis were never going to vote with the real Canadians...

It is similar to the millions of foreigners in CA never voting for the GOP...

So… they only counted 30% of the votes, stopped counting and the communist PM declared victory?

Yup, about right.

Try again and again and again , never stop . Now Carney bring 15-60 million in from India that he calls immigration but it’s really an Invasion . First thing the Indians will do is replace all Canadians politicians then make laws for themselves then bring in another 300-400 million and try to takeover the US

Albertans: I will be surprised if you do not come to regret this. However, in any event I hope things will go well with you.

We saw it with the visiting Europeans for the FIFA World Cup.
Their government run media propagandizes them constantly.

Results matched every poll on the topic. For months. No one can be surprised at the result while being honest about it. The overwhelming majority in Alberta do not want to separate.

“ Threatening the youth of America if they work for pubbies is despicable and needs to be investigated.”

I once thought that the large percentage of Olympians, who trained and/or lived in the USA, but represented their country of origin/citizenship in the Olympics, were appreciative of the USA. I no longer think that. After they use us, especially in colleges, for free education, training, coaching, etc., they mock us. Europeans, especially, really do feel superior.

Of the more than 1200 NCAA Olympians in the 2024 Olympics, fewer than 400 represented the USA in the Olympics. The USA is the only country in the world that has athletics associated with College. In all other countries, athletics are separate from college.
