Matthew McConaughey has released a video on October 18, 2026, urging American voters to ditch the traditional two-party framework and embrace an Independent candidate ahead of the upcoming US midterm elections. In a video posted on social media, titled Independent counts, the 56-year-old actor said:
“So, they’ve been telling us for years that an independent vote is a wasted vote.”
He then asked the viewers how that 'unwasted vote' had been working out for them. The Dallas Buyers Club star then told the viewers that “this is about the upcoming ballot,” and he is not endorsing any party or a candidate.
McConaughey’s video clip immediately sparked a wave of polarized social media commentary from both Republicans and Democrats. This included a reaction from Andy Cohen as well. He took to Threads and remarked:
“What the.”
Some welcomed the call for competition, and others voiced support for the independent plurality. A segment of users called it tone-deaf and speculated it was positioning for a future independent presidential run.Continue to read for more details.

That's called a safety, you dumbass. That means the other team gets the points, you dumbass. What a dumbass. 🙄
The situation is ripe for a coalition to form that could take FDR-level control in 2028 (>400 House >70 Senate) neither major party will surrender their precious 20/80 issues to get there.
The country has to be saved. Who’s going to step up and do the job?
Independents are a code word for democrats who want to sneak in but not shout out that they are really democrats!
Who do the indys vote with? It sure as hell aint republicans!!
Splits the vote.
Matt is smoking stuff again.
That merely means handing the (s)election to dsa.

Says he is a centrist (what is that in Texas, or anywhere?) and basically wants people to sit out the election by throwing their vote away, which in Texas means not voting GOP since the appeal will work more on the right rather than those trying to dislodge the GOP.
McConaughey wants to be relevant in politics so bad. Problem is he lacks any discipline to stick with it.
Stupid.....just vote AGAINST EVERY DEMOCRAT!
“”””Independents are a code word for democrats who want to sneak in but not shout out that they are really democrats!””””
No it isn’t, as a lifelong independent I can tell you that it is more about conservatives who just can’t bring themselves to register as a member of the GOP because it is too liberal, I also know that applies to many who see the Democrats as too right wing, Independent is mostly for people who support one of the two parties but think they are too milquetoast to want to become an official member.
More likely he is pushing Talifreako.
When I’m in need of political advice I always seek the wisdom of people that make their living portraying someone else in a fictional world. 👌
Independent = bereft of principles
This goes both ways. My experiences are what Princess said, but more have been democrats just virtue signaling how they vote for the character of the candidate. Blah Blah Blah...
Which is a true statement in almost all elections. Either the Republican or Democrat will win.
The man is 100% correct.
Political factions are nothing more than cults.
As evidence that is presented here on this site.
Mindless people needing constant directions given to them by their masters.
I learned my lesson with Ross Perot. Even thought he had a great chance of winning!
