SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - A hiker was taken to a trauma center after being struck in the head by a cactus in Scottsdale on Saturday morning.
Scottsdale Fire and Phoenix Fire crews responded to the Bell Pass Trail just after 7 a.m. on Oct. 17, after receiving a report of a woman struck in the head by the desert plant.
The hiker was found roughly two miles from the trailhead in steep terrain. Paramedic e-bike teams were able to reach the woman and treat her on the scene.
Using a Big Wheel and UTV, the injured hiker was taken off the trail and to a nearby trauma center to be evaluated.
Officials did not disclose the events leading up to the hiker being struck, or how the cactus may have fallen. The woman's current condition and exact injury are unknown.

It takes a lot to make a cactus angry, but when they are, watch out!
Just when you’ve Heard it All.
.
Cactus are Not Our FRiend !
They Own Arizona.
I am assuming we are talking about a Sanguaro Cactus. That kind of cactus can grow to towering heights and will be filled with water. Maybe she was trying to slice one of the flower clusters off the side, and pushed it over by accident. Or being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Desert plains can become very windy during sundown.
a cactus ban?
We need a cactus caucus?
It’s obvious they need better cacti control laws.
Maybe it was one of those cell phone tower artificial cactuses. They look horrible.
A Big Wheel is now a rescue device?
Things have certainly changed since I was a kid.
Just proves that while the chance of being attacked by a cactus is small, it is never zero.
I keep picturing in my mind a pickup with a gun rack dragging a cactus into the town with arrows in it celebrating getting that one cactus just like in jaws.

Just here for the jokes
Big wheel? LOL
So, did the cactus fall...or did it jump?!??
We have had high winds and rain most of the week.
Cacti are like octopi. They’re regenerative.
I have seen them with shots fired into their bases for “Fun.” this weakens them and they can be blown over. They are heavy!
We’ve had a couple days of pretty vicious winds. Lots of bits of stuff flying around. A couple of my cacti lost segments, not big enough segments to hurt somebody... unless they were really unlucky. But they can get pretty heavy.
The mathematical probability of a cactus, including a Saguaro, even a sick one, randomly falling on someone along a hiking trail has to be extremely low. In all likelihood either she or someone else with her in some way pushed or bumped or tried climbing on this cactus for some reason and FAFO kicked in.
The mathematical likelihood of winning the lottery is extremely low. And yet people do. The Fickle Finger of Fate.
It may have been the dreaded attack cacti. Rare but dangerous.
I’m from Arizona, and have been attacked by cacti when I was young!
But I survived, and went on to high school, university, and graduate school.
Arizonans are tough!
