Europe's Bridge Too Far: When Common Sense Fails
American Thinker ^ | 18 Oct. 2026 | Allan J. Feifer

The greatest danger is not that Europe fails to recognize its mistakes, but that it recognizes them, understands their consequences, yet still cannot bring itself to act.

Europe is approaching the point where choices become consequences: guaranteeing cradle-to-grave social benefits, taking in millions of unskilled immigrants, struggling with vastly different cultural expectations, and transferring national sovereignty to an all-powerful European Union aligned more with the World Economic Forum than with its citizens. All the while, economic growth, public finances, and a lack of political cohesion present unprecedented challenges that compound every problem.

What happens when a society makes commitments it can no longer deliver, recognizes its policies are failing, yet lacks the political will to change course even as it faces ultimate destruction?

The problem isn't simply immigration, welfare spending, or the EU. It is the growing tendency to put rules, procedures, and approved narratives above the practical judgment needed to preserve the societies those rules were meant to serve.

Europe may discover that immigration is its bridge too far.

Europe built generous welfare states on the assumption that enough people would work and pay taxes to support those who didn't. Demographics are undermining that balance. The European Commission's 2024 Aging Report projects that the EU's ratio of working-age people to those over 65 will fall from approximately three to fewer than two by 2070.

Europe's options include increasing productivity, raising employment, increasing taxes, reducing pension benefits, cutting spending, or attracting talent from abroad. None are slam dunks.

Immigration promised a solution to demographic decline: more workers, fewer shortages, more tax revenue. But the OECD's research reveals a weakness in that argument. In most countries studied, immigrants' net fiscal contribution—the difference between taxes and social contributions paid and public spending attributed to them—was razor-thin, ranging from modestly negative to

I don’t think mass immigration was done to bring in more workers. I think it was done to destroy national unity.

Yes, mass immigration destroys national unity and at the same time creates a permanent underclass voting block that guarantees the globalists remain in power for the duration of time needed to consolidate wealth.

After WW2, Europe brought in temporary “guest workers” from the Balkans and Turkey to help rebuild and restart the engine of Europe’s economy. After a period of work, they were supposed to go back to their countries of origin.

But Europe has failed to replace her own people in sufficient numbers. The idea of bringing in millions from North Africa and Middle-East to permanently resettle for economic reasons (to address the shortfall of native European workers) with no thought (apparently) to the impact on European culture and society boggles my mind.

The people buying 'one use boats' that allow the 3rd world to invade Europe are scummy 'elites' like George Soros.

And the Soros motive?

Soros is evil and desires to spread misery while financially benefitting from that misery. Soros has more money than he could spend. So how did the pig make his money? He made his money 'shorting Great Britain... betting on them failing.

Immigration? INVASION. World War III. What can happen when soldiers without uniforms invade your country.

This may not be accurate. Who knows the future? Maybe reduced numbers WITHOUT anti-Western immigrants will be perfect for a new golden age brought on through increased mechanization, computers, and AI. The immigrants would become a greater problem for many reasons.

I think you are correct. The Leadership knew what it was doing. The author does not state clearly enough that the invaders, brought in, are welfare recipients, themselves. They have not been brought in to save the “system” of pensions and entitlements, but to destroy it.

The racket has been played out and now the table is being overturned.

The elites are so happy they’ve disarmed the native population.

A more brutalist summary after I forced ChatGPT to drop the leftist spin:

The brutal summary

Europe is welfare-addicted, economically stagnating, importing people it struggles to integrate, and governed by bureaucrats too cowardly to admit their policies are failing.

The welfare state is running out of road. An aging population means fewer workers paying taxes and more retirees collecting benefits. Politicians promise cradle-to-grave security without a credible plan to pay for it.

Mass immigration was sold as the solution. The promised workers and tax revenue haven’t reliably materialized. The author argues that importing people who don’t become productive taxpayers cannot rescue a financially strained welfare state.

Assimilation is not automatic. People arriving in Europe don’t necessarily adopt its language, secular legal traditions, civic norms, or expectations about individual rights. The article specifically calls out cultural conflicts involving Muslim immigrants.

Governments can’t even enforce their own immigration decisions. In 2024, EU countries issued approximately 453,000 removal orders but carried out only about 110,000 removals. That’s a government announcing consequences it often fails to deliver.

The political class treats dissent as heresy. Question immigration and you’re branded prejudiced. Question welfare spending and you’re heartless. Challenge the EU and you’re an extremist. The result is political paralysis while the problems worsen.

Brussels is part of the problem. National sovereignty has been diluted by an EU bureaucracy that is too distant from voters and too insulated from accountability. Brexit demonstrated that people will revolt when they believe their political voice has been taken away.

The longer leaders delay, the uglier the reckoning. Eventually, governments must cut benefits, raise taxes, increase productivity, enforce immigration laws, or accept declining living standards. They cannot indefinitely promise everything to everyone.

The author cites Europe’s declining worker-to-retiree ratio, weak competitiveness, high energy costs, regulatory burdens, and immigration’s uncertain fiscal payoff as evidence that the existing model is unsustainable.

The author’s bottom line: Europe is sacrificing economic stability, cultural cohesion, national sovereignty, and democratic accountability to preserve an ideological and bureaucratic status quo. The danger isn’t merely that its policies are wrong. It’s that its institutions have become incapable of correcting them.
And his warning extends to America: When governments value protecting their rules, institutions, and approved narratives more than protecting the societies those institutions were created to serve, failure becomes a choice.

It’s a lack of common sense alright, but it’s coupled with a serve case of, what my dad used to call ‘bullheadedness.’ It’s such a strong belief in your solution that you would sooner be wrong than change your views. In a large way, this is Communist mentality and way of looking at reality. No matter how many times Communism has proven itself to be a bankrupt governing system, there will always be those who insist this time it will work.

The EU has transformed into the Neo-Soviet Union. It’s a failed system. So it will collapse just like the former Soviet Union did in 1991.

I read the European press every day. What's astonishing is to see the tired. globalist coalitions that have governed major European states for three decades:

1) can see the destruction wrought by their failed policies;
2) can see their crumbling poll numbers;
3) can see their electoral defeats in regions and municipal elections;

But they still insist on not changing a damn thing regarding the "green" policies destroying their industries and the migrant policies that are destroying their social welfare systems and introducing massive political instability and anti-Semitism.

There was a long opinion piece in Die Welt yesterday about how the German center-right CDU-CSU has effectively destroyed itself by rolling over for the victory of Die Linke (the old East German Communist Party) in Berlin. This party is open allied with Arab and Turkish organized crime groups, Antifa, and is planning on expropriating apartment buildings in Berlin to alleviate the housing problem. Somehow the ruling coalition has a "firewall" against cooperating with the AfD but absolutely no protection against the extreme left who are truly violent and anti-democratic.
