Amazing man- SSG Alonzo Lundsford shot 7 times- one of which was to the head (that is now public knowledge) Read that again shot point blank 7 times by that man. I was a new doctor rotating on the surgery service on that day. At the purple heart ceremony he talked about struggling with not being about to stop it...I was like, " you are like a wall of power...you stopped 7 bullets, who else could have done that?" I often wondered how many were saved because it took so many bullets to take down SSG Lundsford.

Fortunately Hasan was using a 5.7x28 pistol from FN. That’s likely why SSG Lundsford survived.

I couldn't tell from the post, but is Lundsford still on Active Duty? Be cool if he is.

I had a Drill Instructor who was a Recon, got his head opened up by a propellor on a Zodiac boat. After recovering, he stayed on Active Duty.

There have been numerous FR threads over the years of severely wounded military personnel petitioning to return to active duty and being granted such.

Problems arise later from complications of the wounds and being denied disability by the VA.

No need to run down FN!

But yea, 5.7mm (.224) is not a large round. Nonetheless, fatal to many that day; it’s also a *fast* round.

It’s not a dig on FN, it’s a fact.

The 5.7×28mm cartridge was designed specifically to be fired from the FN P-90, a select-fire SMG with a 10” barrel and a 50-round detachable box magazine. Functionally, it was designed to defeat body armor at close range.

The FN Five-seveN pistol limits the cartridge to semi-auto fire from a 4.8” barrel and a 20-round magazine, a far less formidable proposition. It was designed by FN as an afterthought entirely because the popularity of the P-90 presented the opportunity to market a sidearm chambered for the same cartridge as the SMG.

It also bears mention that when they felt the need for an SMG capable of defeating body armor, the US SpecWar community rejected the 5.7 in favor of the HK MP-7 and it’s 4.6×30mm cartridge.

After the Ft Hood incident, I spoke to the owner of my local gun shop about the Five-seveN. He told me that the day before the shooting, the local wholesaler had 12 on his shelves that had been gathering dust for years. Two days later, they all had sold and he cold have sold another 10 if he’d had them.

It seems mass shootings always boost the sales of the firearm involved, even when the gun’s results were less than impressive.
