Video shows Douglas County K-9s performing rappel training by: Adam Rosen

DENVER (KDVR) — Whether or not you’re a dog lover, this may be one of the most absurd images you’ll ever see.

Yes — that is a dog rappelling down a building. Fear not, though, as it’s a training exercise recently performed by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and their K-9 deputies.
The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office shared a video of training, as deputies worked to teach their K-9s how to rappel in a situation such as a robbery or even a shooter, catching a suspect by surprise.
“Yes, it’s a thing,” the sheriff’s office stated. “This training has come in handy time and time again during real-world deployments.”
The video showed the training session, which the sheriff’s office said is important, especially for the K-9s.
“Just because it’s raining or snowing, we still have to keep them going. You know, we can’t pick and choose when we’re going to deploy,” a deputy in the video said. “We like to expose the dogs to anything and everything we may come in contact with.”
The training came in handy recently, as in Castle Pines, deputies had tracked burglary suspects to about a 35-foot wall, and safely, K-9 Krogu was rappelled down with a special harness.
The harnesses are purpose-built, not the typical harness one may find at a pet shop for a normal walk.
“Just like the gear that we use, we want to give our dogs the best gear as well. So everything that we use is all very safe for them,” the sheriff’s office said. “When we’re getting ready to deploy these dogs, we care about them and want to make sure that they’re safe as well.”
The video also showed the K-9s biting a decoy suspect, wearing a heavily protected outfit.

When I was in the Army we would have called this lowering a dog out a window.
Guess they couldn't teach the dogs how to belay.
Who’s a good boy?
Reminds me of the old joke, “Why don’t they let blind people skydive? Because it scares the hell out of the dogs”
I keep looking at that photo and thinking about what would be happening if that was a cat, it would be a heck of a ride down.
Article author does not know what rappelling is.
Excellent video and short, people should check it out.
I've had Dutch Shepherds for 25 years. Unfortunately, the Internet made them popular. Breeding quality has declined badly with the exception of dogs the military and black ops guys grab before a guy like me gets a chance at one. The pups from top breeders are all spoken for.
Some here will remember this photo from the photos on those threads.
Agreed. That ain’t quite really rappelling.
But that is an awesome dog.
Oh, Man!
Yeah, but that’s probably what he was told.
I couldn’t help but LOL at that. We actually had a cat named Krueger, for that very reason.
I guarantee you that’s AI.
How’s he supposed to hold on to the dog during opening shock? Or steer the canopy to his preferred landing spot while he’s got one hand full of dog?
