Christa Pike likely has ‘brain injury’ after botched execution — here’s what went wrong: ‘Degraded’ drugs, damaged veins

Tennessee death row inmate Christa Pike will likely have brain damage after her botched execution, during which she chillingly lifted her head and asked if the pain she was feeling was normal.

Pike, 50, was rushed to the hospital Wednesday after the Tennessee Department of Corrections administered two doses of the highly potent sedative, Pentobarbital, but it failed to kill her.

The murderer, who was sentenced to death for the monstrous 1995 slaying of a classmate, was “being provided life-saving measures” in the hospital, her lawyers said – but she likely has a brain injury as a result.

Emory University School of Medicine professor Dr. Joel Zivot – who was retained by Pike’s legal team as a medical expert – told the BBC that the amount of the lethal drug pentobarbital in her blood likely never reached a level high enough to stop her breathing and heartbeat.

“It’s very possible that as a consequence of the delay of the beginning of resuscitation she will have a brain injury,” Zivot explained.

Interesting theological argument, albeit one that has never been accepted by any main denomination of Christendom in the last 2,000 years.

Time to change that, right?

I agree. We have a duty to put dangerous people away and we can do that without barbarism. (And for those who are concerned about cost, it’s cheaper to keep them in prison too.)

A .22LR fired directly into one of the eye sockets costs pennies.

Stay classy

Nobody who uses that word possesses it.

Her victim also had damage to body parts. This might be a better punishment than execution.

They should’ve put in a GD central line. I know it’s cheaper to do an IV, but in cases like hers with small, poor quality vessels, a central line would solve the problem. Right into the neck.

There is some speculation that this was purposefully botched, but it she has to live with brain damage, good. What she did was horrific.

Brain injury consequence?
A moot point if a bullet is used.

The death penalty is thought to be effective because the recipient gets to think about it right up until the moment. Then it’s lights out.
So now we have many who are all upset it didn’t work …twice….and now she gets to think about it a third time. I think it’s karma at work.
Hooray for karma.

That’s a pretty low bar.

I will say you are bold to believe that you are correct and essentially all the great thinkers in Christendom were wrong for 2,000 years.

Why would they botch an execution? My guess is to stir up anger against capital punishment.

No one is this incompetent.

Unless it is by design...

They do not have this problem in Japan. The country is unified. So people are not making "mistakes".

Just found out that it was an all female execution team...if so, that makes it more likely that they did it on purpose.

Majority rules doesn’t prove anything. Actaul analysis of what is said does.

Execution should be banned.

No, it shouldn't. Especially when loonie leftist governors and parole boards set “life sentence” convicts free after a few years to commit more capital crimes and/or terrorize their victims' families again.

Crowded prisons? “No problem... let the ones over 50 out.”
